THIRD TEAM
RESULTS & REPORTS
Saturday 7 March 2009
Charlton Rovers 2 - 2 Apperley & Tewkesbury Dynamos III
Rover went into this game knowing that another defeat would almost confirm their relegation status. So following on from a rallying cry from the manager, Rovers went out and amazingly went 2 - 0 up by half time! Firstly Mike Caunter scored a header after a cross from James Blackmore, utilising the new tactical attack at corners that had been devised by Crouchy and Matt Chilvers before kick off. Then following a good counter attack, Lawrence Martin was put through into the box and finished well to make it 2 goals to the Rovers for the first time this season. The second half however started badly. Dynamos came out of the blocks and Rovers hadn't quite switched on, so when a scuffed shot was aimed at keeper Marc Beedon, the scuff fooled him and Dynamos were back in the game. 15 mins later it was all square when a penalty was awarded and the Dynamos player who should have been sent of in the first half for stamping on Alistair Milne, placed it past Beedon. At 2 - 2 Rovers looked like they may let the points all go to Dynamos, but with some sqitching of players, Rovers went on the attack and in the end were unlucky to earn a draw as they had 4 or 5 clear chances to finish the game off in the last 20 minutes. With only 6 games left, Rovers need at least 3 wins if not more to secure their Division 5 status, so play up Rovers 3rd's and lets get those wins!!!!!!
Saturday 28 February 2009
Falcons Res 3 - 0 Charlton Rovers
Rover took on their local rivals in the away fixture at the burrows. Despite showing some good play, Rovers were dogged by some bad luck and inconsistent refereeing, demonstrated when a clear penalty was pulled back to a free kick on the edge of the box. Tom Collinson took it and managed to strike the post, but Rovers felt denied a good chance to score. The game then turned as Falcons hit Rovers on the break and lobbed the stand in goalkeeper Milan Mirkovic. The second half was a story of good luck for Falcons as they managed to force an own goal and then former Rovers player Mikey Davies struck from 40 yards to beat the keeper again. Final score was not reflective of the effort by the Rovers and even some of the Falcon players felt the scoreline flettered them
Man Of The Match: Mike Caunter
SATURDAY 31 JANUARY 2009
FC Electrics 2 - 1 Charlton Rovers
After recent troubles Rovers went over to Staverton to play a mid table FC Electrics side. Rovers reverted back to 4-5-1 (having tried 4-4-2 for the previous 3 games) and it started to pay off. Rovers easily contained the home side and with some masterful defending and a well place free kick from James Blackmore, went in at half time 1 - 0 up. Electrics came all out in the second half and the lack of subs told for Rovers as they started to look very tired. In the end they conceded the equaliser to a very well placed shot from outside the box. UltimatelyElectrics found the winner, but required the ref to over look a blatant off-side violation (there striker was a least 3 foot behind the defence). Despite losing though, Rovers managed not to capitulate and still managed to hit the post and force a few saves out of the Electrics goalkeeper. All in all it was the best performance from the side for a long time and thusly the man of the match awarding was deservedly brought back.
Man Of The Match: James Blackmore
SATURDAY 24 JANUARY 2009
Charlton Rovers 0 - 5 Cleevonians
Once again Rovers failed to find the net and it cost them dearly as Cleeve showed them how to finish infront of goal. The match was generally bad tempered with Adam Irwin being shown a yellow for commenting on a tackle, but suprisingly a number of Cleeve players avoided the book despite telling the ref to go off and fornicate!!!!!
SATURDAY 17 JANUARY 2009
Star FC 4 - 0 Charlton Rovers
2009 started with a bang as Rovers went up against 2nd places Star. Again it was a case of no luck for Rovers as they managed to hit all elements of the woodwork, get two attempts cleared off the line, and have a goal ruled out as the ref felt the ball crossing the line by a foot wasn't suitable to award a goal. Rovers were then caught on the counter four times as they fell to defeat again in the most undeserved fashion.
SATURDAY 20 DECEMBER 2008
Gala Wilton 4 - 0 Charlton Rovers (Minor Charity Cup Round 2)
On the weekend before christmas, Rovers went to Gala and received another hammering as they crashed out of the cup 4 - 0. Despite some early probing, Rovers who had to patch together a team due to christmas, struggled to keep out an impressive Gala.
SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER 2008
Tewksbury Town Res 2 - 2 Charlton Rovers
This game saw a number of first's of the season for Rovers. With ten minutes gone, Rovers had threatened to take the lead a few times already and when Pav Clair sent Rich Cox on a run down the wing, the resulting cross was hammered home by James Blackmore on his full debut for Rovers. For the first time this season Rovers had taken the lead. The half carried on, but Rovers couldn't make their domination count again, missing a number of good chances and allowing Tewksbury to equalise in the process. 1 - 1 was the half time score. The second half bagan and before long Rovers found themselves 2 -1 down having rolled over and let Tewksbury's sub-standard team back into the game. Matt Chilvers made a change and went 4 - 4 - 2, going up front with Rob McGeever. Within 5 minutes it paid off as Dan Payne, collected the ball in the centre circle, put a through ball into Rob who passed it over to Matt Chilvers to place into the bottom corner 2 - 2. Rovers then had a dilemma as Dan Payne was fouled and the resulting injury saw him become a bit part player for the remaining 20 minutes. But thanks to some brave blocking/defending by Chilvers, Irwin and Browning, Rovers managed to end the game with their first away point of the season.
Man Of The Match: Matt Chilvers
SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2008
Charlton Rovers 1 - 4 Star III FC
Rovers went into this game thinking that the performance of the previous week would see them onto greener pastures, unfortunately it was not to be. Despite some good football, Rovers didn't start to really play until they were 2 - 0 down. However, with a slightly annoyed look on his face defensive midfielder Matt Chilvers made a strong run into the Star half, beat the right back, a quick one-two with Jay Bramwell saw the centre back beaten and Chilvers shot.... but it was blocked and rebounded back to Chilvers who shot.... but it was blocked and rebounded to Lawrence Martin who shot..... and scored, making it 2 - 1 at the break. The second half kicked off, but Rovers seemed a shadow of their best and when Star won a penalty, the following goal killed them off. Another goal a few minutes later and all Rovers worried about was to stop it getting worse.
Man Of The Match: Fred Essex
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2008
Charlton Rovers 1 - 1 Sherbourne Harriers
Rovers took on Sherbourne in an odd situation. With the official ref failing to attend a Rovers game for the fourth time in a row, Marc Beedon & Adam Gyde reffed a half each.
Despite dominating the game form the off, Rovers went in at half time 1 - 0 down. A rallying cry from the manager saw Rovers go back out and tear Sherbourne apart and with 25 minutes gone, Matt Chilvers weaved his way out to the left wing, Cryff turned the right back, megged the centre back and took his shot..... The curling shot was almost blocked by the other centre back, but his efforts were futile as his attempted block became a slight deflection and the ball went into the back of the net. Rovers continued to press for a winner, but despite efforts from Matt Chilvers, Tom Collinson and Lawrence Martin, the break through couldn't be found and at full time Rovers finished the game with a share of the points and the taste of disappointment.
Man Of The Match: Fred Essex
SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2008
Tewksbury & Apperly Dynamos 6 - 1 Charlton Rovers
Rover's were unable to continue their good form into a second game as despite holding their opponents to just a 1 - 0 deficiet at half time, the second half saw Rovers opened up. The only bright spot was the spectacular saves made by Sonny Martin in goal and a first goal for Charlton Rovers for Pav Clair.
Man Of The Match: Sonny Martin
SATURDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2008
Charlton Rovers 2 - 2 Falcons
Derby day came around for the second time this season, as Rovers welcomed old rivals Falcons to the Beeches.
From the start both sides shared possession, but as a result of some strong defending, the teams were restricting each other to long range efforts.
However with 30mins played, Falcons broke into the box and were able to square the ball to their striker to make it 1-0.
The 2nd half began with the game playing along similar lines, and after 10 mins Falcons had managed to put themselves 2-0 up following a goal mouth scramble.
Manager Matt Chilvers quickly made some substitutions, bringing on his little brother Chris to join in with the physical battle that was occurring in the middle of the park and ‘Lucky Fred’ Essex to refresh a tired Matt Garner.
Immediately the tide changed and Rovers, with a third battler in the middle began to force Falcons back, in particular Marc Beedon was beginning to get into the box more and if he could only shoot, things might have changed earlier.
However Rovers were getting closer and with 20mins to go, Marc Beedon headed on a throw in to Matt Chilvers, who ran down the left wing, whipped in the ball with his left foot, to see it be met by Mike Caunter, who scored his third goal in 3 games, pulling Rovers back from the brink.
Now the fight was on as Rovers, who hadn’t scored more than one goal in a game since a friendly fixture in August, pressed for that elusive equaliser.
Again Marc Beedon was involved, as he broke down the left and slotted a through ball to Matt Chilvers. The manager shoulder barged the defender marking him away from the ball, weaved into the 18yrd box, composed himself and then curled the ball into the far right hand side of the net…2 - 2 and Rovers were on a high.
With only 4mins remaining, Rovers knew that their luck may not hold, so some sensible defending and holding of the ball followed and the final whistle went.
Only the second point of the season for the 3rds, but they managed to pull a lot of positives from the game and hopefully can now go on and get their first win.
Man of the Match – Mike Caunter
SATURDAY 25 OCTOBER 2008
Gala Wilton 7 – 1 Charlton Rovers
On a gloomy afternoon, Rovers went away to a Gala side who had strengthened themselves with their 2nds squad. As a result of that, and the fact that there defenders didn’t all turn up, Rovers were hammered 7-1, with the only bright spot coming about from the manager Matt Chilvers being clobbered in the box and Mike Caunter slotting home the resulting penalty.
Man of the Match – Mike Caunter
SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER 2008
Charlton Rovers 1 - 1 C&G
With table toppers C&G coming to the beeches, all seemed well on the Rovers front. There was a squad of 14, 5 of which were defenders, there was a league appointed ref and all was rosy.
Then the bad luck that had dogged the 3rds started to rear its ugly head again…
On Friday night at 6:30pm the ref pulled out. No problems there as Andy Payne happily agreed to take his place.
Dom Curnock pulled out with Shin splints, but Matt Hill came in to replace him, so far all hurdles were being dealt with, however Rovers had not counted on the Council…
Upon arrival at the beeches it was discovered that the Council had failed to open the side cupboard, leaving the 3rds with no nets or corner flags, however C&G’s manager came forward and said he would get theirs. Was Lady luck beginning to smile on the 3rds?
The game eventually kicked off, and C&G demonstrated why they were at the top with some strong play through the middle, however Rovers dug in deep and even though they went 1-0 in the first 15mins, the team seemed to have a purpose and strength that had evaded them all season.
As Rovers dug in they began to press and with 30mins gone they had won a corner. Dave Cox swung in the ball and it was met by Mike ‘Crouchy’ Caunter, who headed it into the bottom corner and levelling the scores.
The rest of the game was a tense duel of end to end football, with Rovers putting there hearts and bodies on the line. Even Lady Luck had seen willing to forgive Rovers for whatever transgression they had done to earn her former fury, as twice Rovers were saved as two certain C&G goals struck the cross bar and rebounded into the grateful arms of Sonny the Goalkeeper.
Man of the Match: Matt Hill
SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER
Charlton Kings 5 - 1 Charlton Rovers
Rovers continued bad luck saw them concede 5 goals from only 8 attempts on goal, yet they managed to put only 1 of about 20 of their own chances away.
With three of Kings’ goals coming about from rebounds of the defence, it seems that Rovers ill fortune continues, especially as the expected defenders ended up to be two!
The only bright spot was that Rovers managed to put at least ‘a’ chance away, when at 3-0 down, Dave Cox managed to open his account for Rovers with a strong run through the Kings defence, culminating in a well taken shot into the left hand bottom corner.
Man of the Match: Jay Bramwell
Charlton Rovers 0 – 6 FC Electrics
Rovers ended up feeling completely dumbfounded as the unlucky streak continued. Despite dominating the game for large portions of time and only having three actual defenders, Rovers went into the second half 1-0 down. It was then that lady luck really left Rovers as on no less than three occasions rebounds all landed at the one player who could score, and did.
Rovers created a number of chances with Matt Chilvers forcing the Electrics keeper into two fine saves, but alas the losing streak continues. Next week though Rovers are due to have 4-5 defenders so the excuses will no longer suffice as we are playing Charlton Kings and the aim is to get the season on track.

Charlton Rovers 0 – 3 White Horse FC
In what was to begin a difficult period of players (most notably defenders) going away on there hols, Rovers took the field with only 2 actual defenders in it’s team.
Rovers battled bravely, but in the end the make shift defence could not hold and despite the half time score of 1-0, Rovers in the end collapsed as two defenders were eventually taken off injured.

Cleevonians 3-1 Charlton Rovers
The annual trip to Cleevonians was the same as it always was, a cheating linesman and a dodgy bias ref. Rovers had dominated play for most of this game, and at half time with the scores at 0-0, had looked more likely to win.
Unfortunately, 10 minutes of madness gave Cleevonians a 2-0 lead, but Rovers didn’t give up and managed to force a goal when Ben Williams made a strong run down the wing. His cross eventually found Rob McGeever who tapped in an easy goal and made it 2-1.
Rovers continued to pressure a Cleevonian side that seemed to have run out of ideas, only for a penalty to be awarded after their striker back in to the wall known as Chris Chilvers and bounced off it like a sack of spuds. The ref deemed this to be a push (despite Chris’s hands to have been in the air and no where near the striker), and the result was a converted penalty.
Unfortunately new lad Dom Curnock took the decision exceptionally badly and made a comment to the ref expressing this. The ref felt that this was contrary to the RESPECT campaign and duly sent him off!
The ref then became a tad card happy, and three more yellows were produced to Cleevonian players for verbally insulting the Rovers linesman and the ref.
The final score flattered a Cleevonian side who continue to cheat Rovers out of points on almost every visit.

Charlton Rovers 0 – 5 Tewkesbury Town
They say that bad things come in three’s, well Rovers experienced this and then some on Saturday against a Tewkesbury Town side that didn’t look that threatening.
Following on from the official ref being re-allocated at 8pm on Friday night and the ensuing scramble for a replacement, Rovers turned up for their first game of the season to find that the key to the new changing rooms didn’t work. So after some quick changing in the car (and the only piece of luck in that the nets were in the Managers car), Rovers started their season.
Despite making the early breaks, with Adam Irwin hitting the bar, Tewkesbury took the lead, when some shocking defending led to not one but two goals in a crazy 10 minute spell. Rovers started to get back into the game when the Tewkesbury goal keeper ran out of his area to intercept a through ball, only to handle it quite blatantly 3 or 4 yards outside the box. Rovers were duly awarded a free kick, but the keeper was not even yellow carded.
The second half began, and Rovers dominated from the off, but not being able to make it count, with numerous chances going wide. Then after the 3rd substitute had been made, Ben Williams on his debut pulled up with cramp in both calf’s and Rovers were ironically down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes.
At first they seemed able to resist, but as Tewkesbury scored the 3rd goal, the resistance crumbled and Town ended up 5-0 up against a very unlucky Rovers team.
