RESULTS & REPORTS

Sunday 1 March 2009

Bishops Cleeve 0 - 3 Charlton Rovers

Rovers comfortably beat Bishops Cleeve at Newlands, and the result was never in doubt. Rovers dominated the first half, creating numerous chances. Rovers opened the scoring when a long throw from Nick Bevan was flicked on by Brad Hiscoke and Harry Marrick helped the ball past the Cleeve keeper to make it 1 - 0. A good move involving Nadim Mamoojee and Charlie Homer, gave Nadim a chance from the edge of the area which he hit over. Cleeve rarely threatened but looked certain to equalise after a rush of blood to the head of Craig Baker, saw him come out of his area and miss the ball, giving the Cleeve striker a glorious opportunity, with only 2 defenders on the line to beat he managed to fire wide. They only created 1 real chance after that, a one on one which looked offside but again the Cleeve striker could not find the target. Rovers soon scored their second, Charlie Homer finishing from close range after another long throw, this time from Rich Gamble which Andy Gallagher flicked on too Charlie unmarked at the back post. A third came shortly before halftime, Bradley Hiscoke scoring a 25 yard free kick into the top corner of the net.
The second half was a very boring and dull affair. Cleeve didn't look as though they could be bothered to put up much of a fight and Charlton Rovers didn't need to as they were 3 - 0 up. There were not any real chances or events of note except Rovers could have had a penalty in the last ten minutes when it appeared a Cleeve defender handled the ball, but it was not given by the ref.
James Coulthard won man of the match with a solid display in the back four.

Sunday 22 February 2009

Charlton Rovers 3 - 0 Olveston United

Rovers recorded a comfortable win against Olveston to continue their pursuit for second place in the table. Things started well for Rovers and they were passing the ball around the midfield well to start with. Rovers opened the scoring when a long ball was missed by the defence and Harry Marrick slotted the ball past the keeper one on one. For all it was comfortable Rovers did have a scare, a free kick from 20 yards hit the post and fell to their striker who scuffed the ball against the other post and Rovers managed to scramble the ball away. Harry had another chance to double his tally, however he shot wide when put through on goal. Liam Beams had a chance to score, however his header flew over from 12 yards.
Second half and the goal came pretty earlt to ease any nerves if there were any. Jordan Cooper's cross evaded everybody and Charlie Homer tapped in at the far post. Liam Beams was in the action again supplying the pass to Bradley Hiscoke, and he rolled the ball into the bottom corner. Olveston from here on had more of the ball as Rovers tired, however the defence was solid and they didn't really have a decent attempt on target. Liam Beams won man of the match with an impressive performance at right back.

Sunday 1 February 2009

Charlton Rovers 1 - 5 Almondsbury

Rovers lost their unbeaten home record against top of the table Almondsbury. the visitors deserved to win, but the 5 - 1 scoreline flattered them.
Almondsbury took an early lead from a corner when an unchallenged header went straight into the net from 6 yards out. Rovers equalised almost straight away when Bradley Hiscoke's corner was headed in like a bullet by Charlie Homer. The keeper stood no chance. Almondsbury took the lead again after good build up play around the box resulted in a 20 yarder finding the bottom corner. Their third came shortly after their second when their forward rounded Harry Marrick in goal and scored from a very acute angle. Harry Marrick made some good saves to keep the score at 3 - 1. The best save to turn a shot from 6 yards around the post. Rovers did create some chances in the first half the most notable was a Rich Gamble free kick from 25 yards which the kepper spilled around the post.
Second half was similar to the first, again the visitors attacking mainly. James Kerr made his first appearance since September, after being out with an ankle injury and fitted in the defence like he hadn't been away for five months. Almondsbury's 4th came from a corner again, and again there was no Rovers challenge as the same player headed in unmarked from close range. the fifth came in the dying few minutes as a shot from the edge of the area was struck powerfully past Harry into the corner.
Man of the match was difficult as no-one particularly played brilliantly. Harry played well in goal making numerous saves, however man of the match was Charlie Homer with his goal and good play in the first half.

Sunday 18 January 2009

Charlton Rovers 3 - 0 Stonehouse

The fixture was reversed to Balcarass because Stonehouse'e pitch was unplayable and both teams were desperate to play. This was one of the poorest performances from Rovers this season, however they managed to grind out a solid win and remain unbeaten in 8 games.
stonehouse had lots of possession early on, but they didn't really do much with it. Craig Baker made a smart save diving low to his right to keep out a shot heading for the bottom corner. Stonehouse from there on in created half chances and rarely threatened to score. We finally decided to start battling more and subsequently we took the lead around 20 minutes in. A superb run from Josh Tyler at right back, where he dribbled 40 yards before slipping the ball through to Rich Gamble who hit it past the goalkeeper with the outside of his foot. James Jardine scored our second after a cross from the left fell to him and he hit it hard with his left foot into the goal giving the keeper no chance. Andy Gallagher did a fantastic last ditch tackle at 2 - 0 to prevent the striker shooting and most likely helped preserve our clean sheet as he was about 12 yards out. Nadim Mamoojee supplied a great cross for Charlie Homer, who had his powerful header saved. We did create other chances in the first half, the most notable a free kick from Bradley Hiscoke which was dealt with well by the keeper.
Second half Rovers controlled the game and more chances arose. a Bradley Hiscoke free kick from the edge of the area was pushed around the post. Rovers third came when a Jordan Cooper corner went to the back post and Rich Gamble unmarked volleyed the ball into the net. There was a little "brawl" at the end. Rich Gamble was hacked down by two players at the same time and then some members of both sides went over to get involved. It was nothing more than handbags and the people involved should be embarrassed!
Josh Tyler got man of the match for his contribution supplying a great pass for the first goal and for some great defensive work down the right hand side of defence. To be fair it could have gone to either Rich or Josh. Unbeaten at home still this season.

Sunday 21 December 2008

Charlton Rovers 1 - 1 Charfield

Rovers extended their unbeaten run at home this season after a hard fought draw against Charfield. Rovers will feel aggrieved they didn't pick up all 3 points, as the effort and performance deserved them
The first 20 minutes Rovers started lethargically and Charfield dominated. They took a deserved lead from a free kick on the left which was headed in from 6 yards with no Rovers challenge to be seen. Rovers from here dominated and had many chances to equalise. Jordan Cooper saw a long range effort tipped onto the bar. James Jardine adn Harry Marrick had shots cleared off the line as the pressure rose on the Charfield back 4. Rovers back 4 still had to work hard however and Josh tyler did a fantastic block as it appeared the Charfield forward was through on goal.
Second half Rovers dominated both possession and territory. Craig Baker made a good reaction save from a shot 6 yards out to keep the score at 1 - 0. With time creeping on, people would have began to think that the deserved Rover's goal was never going to come. Charlie Homer rounded the keeper and shot on goal which was on target, however the defender on the line handballed it. Subsequently he was sent off and Charlie stepped up. The keeper guessed right by diving to to his left and he parried the weak penalty to safety. The Charfield defence resisted for as long as they could but the pressure was telling. 10 minutes to go and Andy Gallagher had a chance with his left foot which he blasted over and Bradley Hiscoke had a shot well saved. The goal finally came with about 5 minutes to go. Jordan Cooper's corner went straight into the net. He claimed it was deliberate, but we all know it was because of the strong wind! Rovers had a chance at the death Captain Gallagher again with his left was hit over the bar. Jordan won man of the match with a fantastic display on the left wing.
If there were stats on the match there will have been about 15 shots compared to Charfield's 4 and possession dominated by Rovers. However it was a good draw against a side challenging us for 2nd spot in the league.

Sunday 14 December 2008

Charlton Rovers 5 - 1 Bishops Cleeve

Rovers gave their best performance of the season by far to beat a battling Bishops Cleeve side, to extend their unbeaten run at home at the fortress Balcarass. The pitch was very wet, but playable as it was only the goalmouths which were boggy.
Rovers started brightly and opened the scoring when Andy Gallagher lofted the ball over the keeper and into the corner. The next 30 minutes were even, however Rovers had better chances , another falling to Andy who smashed the ball over the bar. Bishops Cleeve however equalised through a scruffy goal, Rovers had plenty of chances to clear but once the ball fell to their striker 6 yards out he made no mistake and put it inot the net. Rovers recovered soon after by scoring a team goal which consisted of about 10 passes from defence through to attack. The ball was eventually layed off by Harry Marrick to Richard Gamble and he sent his shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Bishops Cleeve had a good chance just before half time but the shot was saved well by Craig Baker.
Rovers scored early in the second half to put the game betond doubt. Rich scored his second after dribbling with the ball through the penalty area and his powerful shot went underneath the keeper. Bradley hiscoke scored a fourth after his deflected shot deviated the ball away from the keeper and into the corner. Charlie Homer added a fifth late on when he latched onto a through ball and shot past the oncoming keeper. James Coulthard came on as sub for his first appearance in a Rovers shirt and looked very comfortable after not playing for two years. A good battling performance from everyone of the players and a deserved victory with Rich Gamble winning man of the match.

Sunday 7 December 2008

Barton & Tredworth 0 - 10 Charlton Rovers

Rovers won their fourth game on the bounce after demolishing Barton 10 - 0. The score line completely showed Rovers dominance all over the pitch and to be honest it could have been more. Bradley Hiscoke opened the scoring with a tap in at the back post, which was closely followed by an Andy Gallagher strike (his first for Rovers) from the edge of the box after good hold up play by James Jardine. Jardine then won himself a penalty after being fouled at the back post and took it himself, hitting it straight down the middle with plenty of power. Barton did have a goal ruled out for offside, after good work from "Richmond" was spoilt by the other forward who pretty much tackled him and finished it in the corner, however he was clearly offside. Our fourth came when Declan Walker's shot from 35 yards found the net as the keeper could only push it into the roof of the net. Bradley added a fifth when he curled one in from 20 yards. Rich managed make it six just before half time, scoring a one on one against the keeper.
At half time subs were made, one of those being Harry Marrick who managed to grab himself the match ball after scoring four goals. He used his pace against the tiring defence to score 3 one on one's and later tapped one in at the back post. Rovers had other chances to score, Josh Tyler hit the post from six yards out after a mazy run and another shot which he appeared to pass the ball to the keeper! Barton came more into the game with ten minutes to go but still couldn't manage a shot on target, leaving Craig Baker very bored in goal. The defence had a solid game throughout, hardly giving Barton a sniff.
Jack Hayman won man of the match from the judge Charlie Homer. He labelled the right backs performance as "A joy to behold". Crucial home game against Bishops Cleeve next week where Rovers are still unbeaten and can look to increase their position in the league to second.

Sunday 30 Novemebr 2008

Charlton Rovers 3 - 3 Bishops Cleeve
(Rovers win 4 - 2 on penalties)

Rovers managed to fight their way through to round 2 of the plate cup after a very close and entertaining game against Bishops Cleeve. Conditions weren't great and it was a cold wintery day. Cleeve started brightly and "Gibbo" had a powerful shot saved by Liam Beames the keeper for the first half. 25 minutes in Cleeve took the lead, Connor barrowcliffe belting it into the top corner of the net. We hit back minutes later though, Bradley Hiscoke rounding the keeper and his shot was saved on the line by their defender. Andy Hayman the referee had no choice but to send him off. Brad then stepped up confidently to hit the ball to the keepers left, the keeper guessed right but the power behind it took it into the net. Barrowcliffe again scored into the corner leaving Cleeve 2 - 1 up at half time. Second half Rovers made their keeper make several saves as they looked for the equaliser. However Bishops Cleeve were awarded a penalty  after handball from Beames. Hitchman then converted the resulting penalty to make it 3 - 1. Bradley scored again and Jordan Cooper rifled a half volley from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. Penalties became a reality after a well battled 120 minutes from both teams.
Harry Marrick in goal was fantastic saving Cleeve's first penalty after diving low down to his right. Bradley Hiscoke scored his, Cleeve scored, Andy Gallagher scored, Cleeve scored and Rich Gamble scored. 3 - 2 to Rovers after htree penalties. Harry then saved again diving to his left meaning if James Jardine scored Rovers won and he delivered.
Harry Marrick was man of the match with a fantastic display in the penalty shoot out and for some of his saves in the second half.

Sunday 2 November 2008

Charlton Rovers 2 – 1 Barton and Tredworth Allstars

Rovers won their second game on the bounce with a hard fought win at home to Barton. Conditions were very different to those when we played away two weeks previous. It had rained for the previous 24 hours and it still continued to rain.

Rover’s performance in the first half was slightly subdued. It was an even game with the only real chances falling to Barton. Craig made a smart save to tip the ball over the bar early on. Our chances fell to brad in the first half, however his shots were from around 25-30 yards and they were dealt with comfortably by the other keeper. Jordan had a shot, which also flashed wide. Bradley supplied many free kicks and corners into danger areas however there wasn’t anyone there to add the finishing touch. As we tried to push for a goal, we looked vulnerable to conceding, however 0 - 0 at half time was fair for both teams.

Early on in the second half, Jack Hayman who is famously known for his hard tackling was cautioned for what only can be described as a horror tackle! Both studs where showing and it was fortunate a leg wasn’t broken. Jack picked himself up from this and let fly with a 45-yard effort, which landed on the roof of the net. Some of the supporters thought it was in. Once reality had kicked in it was back to the game! Barton where beginning to dominate proceedings and were getting more shots on target. Barton took the lead with 20 minutes to go when a through ball was played to ‘Frank’ and he finished well, sending Craig the wrong way and putting it in at the near post. This gave rovers a kick up the backside they needed. We scored literally a minute later, a corner from Bradley, was met by the diving Josh Tyler and he headed the ball into the top corner. This goal made him joint top scorer so far this season with Brad. We pressed for a winner and thought we had it when the keeper saved another Josh header, however it appeared to cross the line (well according to Josh anyway!). Everyone then looked to the linesman. However he was standing on the 18-yard line, with a cigarette in one hand and a mobile in the other. It eventually went out for what should have been a goal kick, but a corner was given and from the resulting corner after an almighty goal mouth scramble, Nadir was in the right place 1 yard out to bundle the ball him. He had another great chance to make the game safe 6 yards out but a fantastic tackle prevented this. Barton managed to get a couple more chances but Rovers held on in probably was a fair scoreline.

Sunday 26 October 2008

Hardwicke U18’s 2 - 3 Charlton Rovers U18’s

Charlton Rovers scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes to snatch victory after a closely fought game between two evenly matched sides. Rovers took the lead in the first 5 minutes, when Bradley Hiscoke hit a 20 yard free kick into the bottom right corner with power. It went in off the post and left the keeper with no chance.

James Jardine also had a good effort from a tight angle but it flew just past the post. Hardwicke clawed there way back into the game, and had two very good chances saved by Craig, diving low to left on both occasions. Rovers still managed to create chances, in a very open game and Andy smashed one just past the post.

Second half Hardwicke began to dominate and enjoyed large spells of possession.  They equalised on the hour mark, a cross from the left was forced in by the forward un challenged. A few minutes later, Hardwicke had a good shout for a penalty turned down by the referee, but he still managed to hit the bar with his shot. A free kick was converted by a player at the back post for Hardwicke after again poor marking, and it appeared there would be no way back for rovers in the game. However a poor clearance by their keeper, fell to Jordan from about 30 yards lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net. Their Manager then had a ‘go’ at their keeper, which resulted in the keeper leaving the pitch. So with 10 minutes to go, they were playing with 10 men. Both sides had chances to win it, again Craig being called into action, making a smart save to his right, and the new keeper for Hardwicke making good saves from Charlie on the right. Jack Hayman, was then fouled after a good run from right back, and then from the resulting free kick, Bradley again found the goal, this time top corner, from about 25 yards out. Man of the match, went to brad for his two free kicks and his general effort during the game. It could also of gone to Craig or Andy in what was a solid performance overall by Rovers.

After a run of 5 away games on the bounce, Rovers have now played 3 of the 4 top teams away from home, and have got top of the table Almondsbury Away in two weeks. We now sit in a good position in the league, and hopefully can build on it at home to Barton and Tredworth next week.

Sunday 19 October 2008

Barton and Tredworth Allstars U18’s 1-0 Charlton Rovers U18’s

Rovers battled hard in very difficult conditions. The referee and the linesman for them were shocking, and the chav with the pole on the side threatening players! The game was a very scrappy affair in which there were few clear cut chances.

Craig had the first shot of the game on target a long punt up field nearly caught the keeper out with the ball almost bouncing over him! Barton had a goal disallowed for offside after around 30 minutes. The fans of Tredworth were very angered by this decision, and soon turned on Barry our linesman calling him a cheat and questioning his decisions. It didn’t matter as they scored a couple of minutes later. The ball was crossed in from the left and their forward who scuffed the first shot, straight to himself tapped a ball into an empty net! We couldn’t get anywhere near their goal as we were being flagged for offside all the time. From a corner, Josh had a chance with his swinger but smashed it high over the bar. Charlie also had a good header saved by the keeper. Our throw ins and corners were very dangerous on a very small pitch. It remained 1 0 at half time.

Second half we were against the wind and struggled to create chances. Craig made a very good save after a 30 yard lob shot nearly sneaked in under the bar. We quite clearly should have had a penalty, when Charlie was fouled, but nothing was given. He did also dive towards the end of the game, which looked funny as it was so obvious he dived! In the last minute from a corner Andy hit the post with a header, and it fell to Josh who could of made it 3 in 3 games, however he lashed the ball wide.

We were unlucky to lose the game however doing so meant we went into the plate competition which realistically we have a chance of winning. We filed two complaints against them, with the outcome unknown as of yet.

Sunday 12  October 2008

Matson U18’s 9 - 4 Charlton Rovers U18’s

Rovers were in the game for 60 minutes of the game, then we just collapsed literally! It didn’t start very well, as they scored after a couple of minutes as a through ball split the defence and there forward tucked the ball into the left hand corner. We battled and worked very hard against clearly a better team than us. We hit the post when Harry got on the end of a free kick, but hit the inside of the post and the keeper and it was kept out. We did manage to equalise after 40 minutes when a mix up between defence and keeper meant brad could pass the ball into an empty net. Surely, the plan would then have been to hold on to half time at 1 1. However on their next attack, they scored. We had several chances to clear the ball, however eventually the cross came from the left and was hit home powerfully by the forward who was unmarked as rovers just watched him ghost through.

Second half we started very strongly, and deserved to equalise. James Jardine hit the back post with a great flick header from a free kick. We then got a penalty, however Rich’s effort came back also off the post. Our heads clearly began to slip, and maybe if we had of got an equaliser maybe the result would have been different. The sucker punch third came from a one-on-one and was slotted under Craig. The fourth goal, was a good goal from their perspective, the forwards skill got him past for players before sticking it in the far corner, leaving Craig with no chance. Our heads soon slipped even further with more one-on-ones being scored. Our shape was all over the place, and a lack of communication between players meant further mistakes were being made. Rich scored our 2nd to make it 6 2, however further defensive mistakes meant goals kept being shipped! Josh Tyler managed to score his 2nd in two weeks , with a well placed tap in from 2 yards after Andy Gallagher drilled in a low cross. There last goal, another through ball, which the forward lifted it over the on coming keeper. The best goal of the game came late on. Rich Gamble taking the pall past about 5 players with close control and placing it into the left corner of the net leaving the keeper with no chance.

They were a very good team at passing the ball and weren’t afraid to take a touch or pass the ball backwards. They were also only U17’s! Their forward scored 5 goals which was impressive. An off day defensively but scoring 4 goals and hitting the post 3 times, on another day it could have been so different.

Sunday 5 October 2008

Frampton YFC 1 Charlton Rovers 2

Rovers got back to winning ways with a great battling performance away at Frampton in very tricky weather conditions. In the first half, the wind was blowing towards the Rovers goal and the back 5 had to deal with sustained spells of pressure. Craig Baker had to make a smart save from a corner, pushing a header onto the post. Frampton Wasted many chances after getting into some good positions but their goal came after around 25 minutes a through ball left their forward one on one who took it round the keeper and squared it for his partner up front to tap into an empty net. There were suspicions of offside but the goal still stood. From this moment on Rovers dominated the game and the goal seemed to give everyone the kick up the backside to get back into the game. Rovers equalised after 40 minutes when great work from Harry Marrick on the right, he used his pace to beat the defenders and he crossed for Charlie Homer to tap in at the far post. Rovers had already had a goal disallowed for a foul on their keeper, but still managed to take the lead at half time. The goal came from a corner, Josh Tyler on his 18th Birthday scored a rare goal by finding space and slotting home the winner.

Second Half Rovers completely dominated the game because of the wind advantage. The midfield 5 worked extremely hard, James Jardine in particular doing a very good job. Charlie Homer had numerous chances to add a third in the second half, and the midfield did brilliantly to keep supplying balls through to him. The Rovers end was empty for most of the second half.

The 4-5-1 formation worked well with Andy Gallagher the new captain leading the boys to their first away win of the season. Nick Bevan at Left Back won man of the match for a great battling defensive display, although in truth about 5 people could of won the award, a great team effort!

Sunday 28 September 2008

Charfield  4 Charlton Rovers  0

Charfield enjoyed a league second victory in a hard fought game against their Cheltenham rivals. In the opening 20 minutes Charfield were the better side and had number of snap shots that peppered the Charlton goal which their 'keeper dealt with comfortably. However, on the 25 minutes a through ball by Dan Salisbury found Jamie Bennett who scored with ease. From this point Charfield failed to stamp any authority on the match and Charlton nearly scored when a header from a free kick hit the bar. Early into the second Charfield extended their lead when Ally Warren out wide on the right struck a thunderous shot into the top corner, giving the 'keeper no chance. Again Charlton came back into the game and but for some sound handling by the hosts goalkeeper Tom Fussell, could have scored on a number of occasions. Finally, in the 75minute Charfield took command of the game. A sweeping move through midfield saw the ball end up wide on the right. This time a cross from Bennett was headed home by Alex Read unmarked on the back post. Charfield rounded off there victory with a second goal from Ally Warren who cut in from the left to score with a rising shot giving the keeper little chance.

Sunday 21 September 2008

Charlton Rovers 3 Stonehouse 0

Stonehouse started brightly and were unlucky not to take an early lead with the Rovers keeper beaten Stonehouse hit the bar and from a corner the ball was hastily cleared from the line. Charlton settled into their stride and the game became more even, but Stonehouse continued to attack creatively with Rovers forced to hurry their clearances and their attacks were easily quashed. Rovers got the break from a long ball from their keeper, headed on by one striker and finished with a tidy lob from Harry Marrick. The second half was fairly even with both teams challenging for a goal. Stonehouse were denied by Rovers keeper who made a strong save to push the ball round the post from a low drive from the edge of the 18 yard box. Rovers sealed the game with a second goal scored by Charlie Homer that resulted from a good build up from within the Rovers half. Rover’s third, scored by James Jardine, was a wonder goal from within the Stonehouse area that looped over the defence and keeper into the far corner. The tempo remained high with both sides picking up a late caution. Rover’s man-of-the-match worked tirelessly in the centre of defence was James Kerr.

Charlton Rovers 1 Forest Green Rovers 1

This was the first game of the season for both sides in the newly formed Gloucestershire division of the Bristol Combination U18s League. Forest Green started off very lively and put Charlton Rovers on the back foot for the first 20 minutes, but Charlton found their feet and started competing. Charlton’s back four handled the pressure very well and the team started to get a more possession with Andy Gallagher and Brad Hiscoke winning more central ball and linking up with the forwards. Forest Rovers continued to push hard with Charlton defending many corners. Craig Baker dominated his area but the ball almost sneaked in on one occasion but Declan Walker was there to clear the ball from the line. Towards the half time break the game became more even with both sides creating chances. The second half started evenly, but Forest Green got the early goal through Josh Wilson who latched onto the ball outside of the area, left the left back standing and one on one with keeper blasted it home. Charlton brought on some fresh legs that maintained the tempo and Charlton were able to push on for the equaliser. Andy Gallagher went close, but the Charlton goal came with 10 minutes to go when Jordie Cooper hit a well placed 20 yard shot into the right hand corner. Forest Green did not sit back and continued to push for the win, and had an appeal for a penalty that was dismissed by the referee. Charlton hung on, defended valiantly and tried to attack on the break, but play ended with a well deserved point for each team.
