Tuesday 20th April 2010

Northway 6 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Pat Daly scored a great goal, finding himself one on one with the keeper after being put through by Mike McCarthy and calmly slotting the ball into the corner to score a much needed first goal for Rovers. Then the unbeleivable happenned, another Rovers goal. McCarthy again did well down the left and cut the ball back to Pete Hambling who steadied himself and sent the ball past the despairing keeper. Rovers were flying, one of the greatest spells of football they had played for months.

Shame about the previous 80 minutes.............when Northway scored 6!

Saturday 10th April 2010

Northleach Town 5 - 3 Charlton Rovers

Rovers started this game by far the better side and ripped Northleach open time and again for the first 44 minutes. Rovers were looking dangerous all over the pitch and created several chances, Jon Adams hitting the post from a free kick and Pete Hambling seeing a couple of chances being well saved by the keeper. Rovers went in front when Tom Herbert rose to meet Adams' corner and nod the ball over the line. For all Rovers dominance however they again exposed their achilles heel just before half time; defending from corners. 1-1 at half time.

The second half started and Northleach started scoring; scoring more often than a young w***e with a taste for c**k. They racked up 5 in half an hour. Rovers looked red raw. The away side did get a couple back at the death through Pat Daly and Tom Herbert and a fightback looked very much on, however in the end Tom Prices' men were beaten by the clock (and 5 s**t goals).

Starting XI: R Cox, M McCarthy, B Williams, J Price(c), S Johnson, J Adams, J Callinan, K Hall, P Daly, P Hambling, T Herbert.

Subs:
T Hume FOR S Johnson, M Hill FOR J Callinan

Saturday 20th March 2010

Charlton Rovers 2 - 3 Cinderford Town Res.

Rovers had much of the posession in the early stages and looked threatening, with Jon Adams firing narrowly over after good work down the right wing by Pat Daly. But it was Cinderford who took the lead after an error in the Rovers defence allowed their striker to tap the ball in from close range. A similar mistake straight after at the other end allowed Tom Herbert to face the keeper one on one and the Rovers striker made no mistake to pull the home side level.

It was a similar story in the second half. Two more defensive errors gifted Cinderford two more goals but Rovers battled hard and pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining after Tom Herbert again appeared in the right place at the right time to nod over the keeper, following Pete Hambling's flick on. Despite having a stonewall penalty turned down when Daly was felled in the box, Rovers pressed on and were unlucky not to pull level at the death when Mark Herbert rose to meet Adams' corner and his header was superbly tipped round the far post.

Starting XI: R Cox, J Cooper, M Herbert(c), J Price, S Johnson, J Adams, J Williams, J Callinan, P Daly, T Herbert, P Hambling.

Subs:
 M McCarthy FOR S Johnson

Goals: Tom Herbert (2)

Man Of The Match: Tom Herbert

Saturday 13th March 2010

Charlton Rovers 1 - 2 Bredon Res.

Rovers looked to build on their recent good performances against Bredon, a side only a couple of places above them in the league. The game started well for the home side and several chances were created. Jon Adams saw an early long range effort well saved by the keeper and Pete Hambling also saw a chance saved at the near post. But it was the away side who went ahead against the run of play. Rovers continued to pressure however and were soon rewarded when good work down the right hand side saw Jack Coopers' cross into the box cause a scramble, and Tom Herbert was there to poke in from a tight angle. 1-1 at half time.

Rovers looked to press again in the second half but were finding it hard to play their usual free flowing football on the bobbly pitch. Bredon again scored to put their noses in front after a break. Rovers had their chances however, Adams forced a fine save from the keeper after good play from Hambling, and Hambling himself had a one on one chance saved by the keeper after he was put through by Jimmy Callinan. The Bredon number 1 was having a busy day. Depsite having all the play Rovers could not find a way past the resolute Bredon defence, and the score remained 2-1 at the final whistle.

Starting XI: R Cox, J Cooper, M Herbert(c), J Price, S Johnson, J Adams, K Hall, J Callinan, M McCarthy, T Herbert, P Hambling.

Subs:
J Williams FOR P Hambling, P Daly FOR J Callinan, T Barton FOR M McCarthy

Goals: Tom Herbert

Man Of The Match: Jimmy Callinan

Saturday 6th March 2010

Real Whaddon 5 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Buoyed from their victory over Falcons, Rovers travelled into deepest darkest Whaddon to face the league leaders. Tom Price's team started well and were the better side during the opening exchanges, and were soon rewarded with a goal, with Pete Hambling expertly lobbing the advancing keeper to put Rovers in front. Whaddon soon replied however, scoring from a corner. Undettered, Rovers again pushed on and again went in front, this time when a Tom Barton free kick was nodded in at the far post by Pat Daly. Rovers again conceeded however to bring the game back level. It was all going well for the away side until a freak 5 minutes leading up to half time saw them concede 2 own goals, with neither defender to blame for the unlucky turn of events. Rovers also had a chance to pull one back but when Barton was inches away from getting on to the end of Mark Herberts quickly taken free kick with the goal at his mercy.

The second half started and Rovers continued to battle but with little success. Rich Cox in goal pulled off a couple of world class saves to keep the score at 4 - 2 and thats how it remained until 10 minutes from the end when the referee failed to spot a push on Herbert that even Stevie Wonder would have picked out, and awarded Whaddon a goal they were lucky to get. The Rovers skipper received his marching orders for demonstrating his distaste for the descision. As in recent meetings between the 2 sides, much was promised from Rovers but in the end it just wasnt to be.....here's to next time.

Starting XI: R Cox, J Cooper, M Herbert(c), J Price, S Johnson, J Williams, K Hall, J Callinan, T Barton, P Daly, P Hambling.

Subs:
M McCarthy FOR J Williams, T Herbert FOR P Daly, J Adams FOR T Barton

Goals: Pete Hambling, Pat Daly

Man Of The Match: Rich Cox

Saturday 27th February 2010

Charlton Rovers 2 - 0 Falcons

The village turned out in force for this much anticipated return leg between the established masters of the Charlton Kings, Rovers, and the challengers to that throne, Falcons. Much like the last meeting the game was played on a heavy pitch with no love lost between the 2 sides. The first half was dominated by the midfield battle with few chances falling to either side. Chris Courtney Smith pulled off a great near post save with his face to deny the Falcons and Jimmy Callinan saw a long range effort fly just wide of the post. Then a great move down the Rovers right forced the first goal. Keith Hall played the ball to Jon Adams on the right wing who then drilled the ball into Tom Herberts feet. His deft touch round the corner to Pete Hambling allowed the striker to look up and pick out Mike McCarthy at the far post, whose side foot volley hit the back of the net. Brilliant goal. 1 - 0 to Rovers at the break.

Falcons again had few chances in front of goal in the second half with Courtney Smith sweeping up well behind the Rovers defence to cut out the long ball. The biggest threat to Rovers appeared to be the sodden pitch which was holding up the ball. Rovers doubled their lead near the end of the game when a Tom Barton corner was swung in and met by the head of skipper Mark Herbert, whose downward header nestled in the bottom corner. Falcons did have a chance to grab a goal back late on after their striker rounded Courtney Smith but Sam Johnson was on hand to clear the tame shot off the line. 2 - 0 Rovers and their status as Kings of the village reaffirmed.

Starting XI: C C-Smith, J Cooper, M Herbert(c), J Price, S Johnson, J Adams, K Hall, J Callinan, M McCarthy, T Herbert, P Hambling.

Subs:
P Daly FOR T Herbert, T Barton FOR J Adams, J Williams FOR P Hambling

Goals: Mike McCarthy, Mark Herbert

Man Of The Match: Sam Johnson

Saturday 20th February 2010

Gala Wilton 0 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers travelled to Gala and on a sticky pitch were soon put under pressure. In the opening minutes Gala had hit the bar and forced Sam Johnson to clear the ball off the line. Rovers were undetterred however and soon started to create chances of their own. Tom Herbert put Jon Adams through on the right hand side and his shot was well saved by the keeper. Tom Barton also had a chance to score after being put through one on one but again the keeper did well, getting down to turn the ball round the post. Rovers were battling all over the pitch with Pat Daly pulling off a tremendous block in the box and Jonny Williams breaking everything up in midfield for Rovers.

The second half started and it was one way traffic, Rovers were firmly in control. Barton again had a chance which was put just off target and Tom Herbert was unlucky to see the flag raised when put through one on one. Pat Daly also had a chance well saved by the keeper. The returning gaffer, having spent the last couple of months testing out his ideas on football manager, then rejigged the attack moving Barton out wide and pushing Daly up top, and the changes didnt take long to pay off. Good work down the left gave Daly a half chance in the 6 yard box which the keeper did well to get down to however he could not prevent the ball from trickling away from his grasp giving Tom Herberts predatory instinct a chance to kick in with the Rovers number 10 clamly slotting the ball into the empty net. The second followed straight away. Mark Herbert won the ball on halfway led the Rovers surge into the box. The ball was spread out wide to Barton who beat his man and delivered a low cross into the box, which Tom Herbert just beat his brother to, to again knock into the net from close range. 2-0 and Rovers were flying. Rovers had a slight wobble when an indirect free kick in the Rovers box forced 10 men back on to the goal line, but Rich Cox's beautiful new shiny pink gloves managed to put off the striker forcing him to shoot over. Rovers even had a chance to grab a third late on when Pete Hambling cut in but his shot was again saved by the keeper. 2-0 Rovers and a first win on 2010.

Starting XI: R Cox, J Cooper, M Herbert(c), J Price, S Johnson, J Williams, J Adams, M McCarthy, P Daly, T Herbert, T Barton.

Subs:
J Callinan FOR S Johnson, K Hall FOR J Williams, P Hambling FOR J Adams.

Goals: Tom Herbert (2)

Man Of The Match: Jon Williams & Jack Cooper

Saturday 06th February 2010

Charlton Rovers 0 - 1 AC Olympia

After a 5-0 drubbing earlier in the season Rovers were determined to give a better account of themselves against high flying Olympia this time around. In a hard fought first half neither side had many clear cut chances. Olympia came close to scoring when their left winger sliced his cross, but with the ball seemingly flying high into the back of the net, Craig Baker pulled off an awesome save, throwing himself backwards to tip the ball over the bar. Another Olympia cross again nearly caused problems for Rovers with Mark Herbert getting the vital touch to cut out the centre, deflecting the ball wide via the post to prevent a certain goal. Rovers had a couple of chances of their own with Pat Daly cutting in from the right and rattling the bar with his left foot shot.

The second half was again a closely fought battle with most of the action occuring in the last 10 minutes. Olympia took the lead on 20 minutes after a cross from their right hand side was put to the back post and their player stretching to tap the ball over the line, a cruel blow for Rovers who did not deserve to be behind. This gave Rovers the impetus to push on and they very nearly grabbed an equalizer late on. With flashbacks to Gazza in euro 96, a cross from the right missed both Tom and Mark Herberts outstretched feet by inches which surely would have resulted in the goal Rovers deserved. As it was the game ended in defeat but Rovers battled to the last and definately deserved at least a point.

Starting XI: C Baker, J Adams, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, M Hill, J Williams, J Callinan, P Daly, R Cox, T Herbert, P Hambling.

Subs:
 S Johnson FOR R Cox

Man Of The Match: Jon Adams

Saturday 23rd January 2010

Charlton Rovers 2 - 4 Broadway United

Rovers first game of the new year threw up a tough test against high flying Broadway. Sporting a new midfield 'diamond' Rovers played sparkling football at times but it was the away side who scored the first goal, and then the second. Rovers were creating chances for themselves however, Pete Hambling did well to create space for himself on the edge of the box on more than one occasion and shoot just wide of the target. Jack Cooper also had a shot cleared off the line following a corner. Rovers got one back before half time when a Jonny Williams long throw (!!??) caused understandable confusion within the Broadway defence and Jon Adams reacted first to poke the ball past the keeper from a tight angle. Adams could have had a second minutes later when a good break from Rovers saw the ball fall to the midfielder on the edge of the box. His shot accross the keeper was well saved and Pat Daly was almost on hand to tap in the rebound; the sodden pitch effecting the run of the ball and taking it away from the striker.

Midway through the second half Rovers failed to clear the ball and the resulting cross was nodded in at the far post. Rovers soon halved the defecit again however when Jimmy Callinan picked up the ball in midfield and threaded through a great ball for Hambling to run onto and place past the onrushing keeper. Tom Herbert then produced the save of the season so far, diving away to his left to turn a shot round the post to keep the home side in it. Rovers continued to press but Broadway were equal to anything Rovers threw at them. The away side then made sure of the victory at the death. With Rovers pushing on looking for the equalizer they were left short at the back the Broadway striker made no mistake with his finish. Final score Rovers 2 - 4 Broadway. Despite the scoreline Rovers can take a lot of positives from the game and can look to build on their good performance in the next game.

Starting XI: T Herbert, M McCarthy, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, S Johnson, K Hall, J Adams, J Williams, J Callinan, P Daly, P Hambling.

Subs:

Bredon Res. 6 - 4 Charlton Rovers

Rovers kicked off against Bredon in horrific conditions and were soon 1-0. Sam Johnson and Mike McCarthy combined well down the left to cross to Pat Daly who finished well in the bottom corner. Rovers suffered an early blow after this as Mark Herbert limped off injured after a late tackle from the Bredon striker and Bredon got one back soon after. Rovers took the lead again after McCarthys corner was met by Daly at the back post. His header was cleared off the line but Jimmy Callinan was on hand to turn the ball over the line for his first goal for the firsts. Again, Bredon grabbed an equalizer but then, just before half time, Jack Cooper produced one of the goals of the season to give Rovers a lead at half time. Jon Adams swung a corner in from the right and Cooper was there on the edge of the box to meet the cross on the half volley, left footed, and smacked the ball first time in off the underside of the bar!

The second half started with the wind picking up and blowing straight in the faces of the Rovers players. Bredon quickly scored 4 goals in quick succession as Rovers struggled to get the ball out of their half due to the horrendous conditions. Attempted clearences were only going 10 yards and and Bredon shot came bullet like towards Tom Herbert in goal. Despite this Rovers did eventally manage to start to get the ball down and play 10 minutes from the end and they were rewarded with another goal. Jon Adams was brought down on the edge of the box and the quick thinking Jon Williams played the ball to Adams as Bredon were setting their wall. Adams' volleyed hard at goal and the keeper did well to save, but Daly was there, inches ahead of Pete Hambling, to turn the ball in.

Starting XI: T Herbert, M Hill, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, S Johnson, J Adams, J Callinan, J Williams, M McCarthy, P Daly, P Hambling.

Subs:

Charlton Rovers 2 - 6 Real Whaddon

Rovers toughest challenge of the season so far came in the driving rain and blustery wind against Real Whaddon. Rovers got off to the worst start possible, conceding direct from kick off, with the Whaddon midfielder using the wind to good effect and launching a shot from halfway which sailed over Tom Herbert and into the Rovers net. Rovers soon found themselves 2-0 down then 3-0 down without threatening much themselves. Then manager Tom Price, aided by his sidekick Rich Cox, decided to tinker with the formation, going from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1. This changed served Rovers well and the home side got to half time without conceding again.

The second half started with Rovers looking much more solid and even began to take the game to the table toppers. Rovers got a goal back half way through the second half. Pete Hambling picked up the ball on the left hand side, cut inside and picked out Jon Adams on edge of the box. The midfielder took a touch and drove the ball into the corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Rovers seemed buoyed by the goal but unfortunately conceded another goal straight away. Chances were coming Rovers way with Jonny Williams and Mark Herbert both shooting over from the edge of the box. At the other end, Rovers were desperatly attempting to keep out the opposition. Jack Cooper and Ben Williams both produced last ditch tackles to deny the Whaddon strikers shots on goal, and Tom Herbert did well to push an attempted chip onto the bar before gathering the rebound. With Rovers pushing on however Whaddon goals 5 and 6 followed. But Rovers refused to lie down and started playing some great football and even managed another goal. In a move almost reminiscent to Shearers famous goal against against Holland in Euro '96, Caz Lonergan received the ball on the left, played the ball into Hambling who layed the ball accross to Adams on the edge of the box. Adams dummied shot fooled the defender and instead he played in Pat Daly on the right hand side of the box to drive a first time shot at goal. The keeper did well to push the shot onto the post but Hambling was on the scene to turn in the rebound. Then with minutes remaining Mike McCarthy cut the ball back to the edge of the box where Matt "Rimmer" Hill was lurking and he struck his first shot at goal for 5 years low down to the goalies right, and as a silence fell over Balcarass............................ the keeper managed to get down and turn it around the post. Despite the 6-2 scoreline, Rovers took heart from a good second half performance

Starting XI: T Herbert, M Hill, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, B Williams, S Johnson, P Daly, J Williams, J Adams , C Lonergan, P Hambling.

Subs:
M McCarthy FOR M Herbert, R Cox FOR S Johnson

Saturday 7th November 2009

Charlton Rovers 5 - 3 Cinderford Town Res.

Rovers came tearing out of the blocks in this county cup game against fellow division 2 side Cinderford Town. After the success of recent weeks Rovers played with confidence and scored their first early on. Jon Adams was released down the right and his cross was only half cut out by the away defence, giving Tom Barton the opportunity to latch onto the loose ball on the edge of the box and hit a great first time shot into the bottom corner. It was 2 soon after. After Adams had been brought down on the right hand side Rovers were awarded a free kick. Jonny Williams swung in the set piece from the right and Pete Hambling looped his header from the 18 yard line over the keeper and into the net. Hambling then doubled his tally minutes later, Caz Lonergan storming down the left and cutting the ball back for Hambling to smash the ball in from close range. 3-0 and barely 20 minutes on the clock. Rovers then conceded a sloppy goal after a pass back was intercepted and the Cinderford striker finished well. But Rovers soon restored their 3 goal advantage. Mark Herbert cleared a Cinderford corner and found Adams midway in the Rovers half and his pass picked out Barton's well timed run to beat the offside trap. Barton made no mistake with the finish slotting it past the keeper as he narrowed the angle. One of the most controversial decisions in Fortress Square Nets glorious history then followed. After the Cinderford striker was brought down in the box the away side were awarded a penalty, which Tom Herbert brilliantly saved. The ref however had other ideas and ordered a retake for encroachment, which the relieved Cinderford centre back dispatched, although Herbert was unlucky not to keep this effort out as well. 4-2 Rovers.

The second half started well again and Rovers soon notched up another one. Good work down the right involving Matt Hill, Keith Hall and Jon Adams set up Jonny Williams to turn inside and pick out the top corner with a beautiful curling shot from 25 yards (35 if you ask Jonny!). Rovers then conceded after a break down the Cinderford right ended with an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Rovers then remained in control until the end of the game and even had time for Caz Lonergan to launch a fierce shot against the inside of the post from the edge of the box. 5-3 Rovers and into the next round. Happy Days.

Charlton Rovers 1 - 1 Gala Wilton Res.

If ever there has been a game of 2 halves it was this. First half Rovers were awesome; solid defensively, creative going forward and dominating all over the pitch. Pat Daly had the first chance of the game after finding himself one on one with the keeper but his shot was fired over. Daly then did well to break down the right and square the ball to Pete Hambling, and with everyone expecting the inform striker to stroke the ball into the empty net, a Gala defender produced an outstanding tackle to deny him. The ball fell to Jonny Williams' whose left foot shot missed the angle of post and bar by inches. Hambling did eventually break the deadlock however. Jimmy Callinan's great first time pass from midfield split the defence and put Hambling through one on one; the Rovers number 9 made no mistake with the finish slotting it past the big keeper. Rovers could have doubled the lead, again after good work from Daly down the right, his ball in found Jon Adams whose shot from close range was directed straight at the keeper. Williams again had a chance to put his name on the scoresheet after Hambling had laid the ball back to him his left foot shot flew just wide of the post. The Rovers defence were doing their bit, keeping Gala away from goal, and the one time they did get through following a corner, stand in keeper Tom Herbert produced a quality save down to his right.

Rovers came out for the second half frustrated about the quality of their finishing and let this frustration creep into their performance. The free passing of the first half was no where to be seen and chances were few and far between. Pat Daly had the best chance of the half after Adams had cut inside and split the defence with a pass that saw Daly approach the keeper one on one, but again the keeper was equal to Daly's effort. Then disaster struck for Rovers as a long crossfield pass was not cut out and the Gala striker produced a good finish at the far post to bring the scores level. Caz Lonergan had a good chance at the end of the game to restore Rovers lead but his shot flew over the crossbar.

Starting XI: T Herbert, M Hill, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, S Johnson, J Adams, J Callinan, K Hall, J Williams, P Daly, P Hambling.

Falcons 0 - 1 Charlton Rovers

24th October 2009; a day that will go down in history. Rovers travelled to their former home ground, the Beeches, to face their former reserve side, Falcons, for the first time in the clubs recent history. Arguably the hottest local derby in the Cheltenham leagues proved to be a fantastic game, played at a high tempo and with a great attitude from both sides. In the first half Falcons brought the game to Rovers, marauding down both flanks as well as through the middle, but found no way past a compact away side who were doing well to limit Falcons to a couple of long range efforts which keeper Chris Courtney Smith was more than equal to. With a strong head wind making it a difficult half for Rovers they did well to soak up the Falcons attack and even had the best chance of the half when Keith Hall’s cross was headed just over by Matt Courtney Smith. Rovers also had a strong penalty appeal turned down when Jon Adams attempted to lift the ball over his marker only to see the defender stop the ball with his arm. Ball to hand apparently.

A passionate team talk from Tom Price built on the belief that his side took into the second half and on the hour Rovers were almost rewarded. Mark Herbert’s free kick was angled in to the box and Adams, having lost his marker, put his header just over the bar from the edge of the box. Falcons had a let off, but only minutes later, Pete Hambling broke the deadlock. A good move down the left involving Mike McCarthy and Tom Barton saw the ball put through to Hambling in the box, and with the keeper fast closing down the angle, the Rovers number 9 produced a quality finish to dink the ball over the keepers flailing hand and into the corner. 1-0 Rovers. The game continued with Falcons desperate to equalize but Rovers were winning battles all over the pitch, particularly Jonny Williams not giving Woody a sniff in midfield and Matt Hill not letting anything past him down the Rovers right. The 3 substitutes also hit the ground running and were a credit to the side closing down play at every opportunity using their energy to good effect putting in tackles all over pitch. Chris Courtney Smith pulled off a good one on one save to deny Falcons near the end, and the away side also had Jack Cooper to thank for clearing one off the line at the death. The final whistle brought the players to their knees in a mixture of exhaustion and joy, hopefully this is the win that will kick start the Rovers season.

Andoversford 5 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers travelled to Div 1 side Andoversford for a league cup match which would provide a welcome break from the league. Rovers switched to a new formation for this game and started brightly. Pete Hambling was unlucky to see his header saved by the keeper after Ben Williams nodded Mark Herberts free kick across the face of the goal. Herbert also saw his header fly just over following a corner from Jon Adams. It was the home side who took the lead from an unstoppable free kick, going into the break 1-0 at half time.

After the break Rovers again looked by far the better side but conceded 2 more goals. The third goal seemed to give Rovers the kick up the arse they needed and kicked off with the bit between their teeth. Jon Adams was unlucky to see his header hit the bar after a good cross from Matt Hill, Caz Lonergan was denied by a great save from the keeper and soon after Rovers got their goal. Jon Williams corner caused a goal mouth scramble which was eventually met with a bicycle kick from Jon Adams who turned the ball accross goal for Pete Hambling to knock over the line. Hambling again was on target just minutes later folliwing Tom Barton's through ball. Hambling took it round the last man and produced a brilliant finish, lobbing the keeper from a tight angle. Rovers were right back in it at 3-2 and should have scored when Hamblings pass accross the goal was knocked just wide by Barton. In their efforts to equalize, Rovers were caught knapping defensively and two breakaway goals in the last few minutes sealed the win for the home side. A dissapointing result but a very encouraging display as Rovers go into their local derby next week.

Starting XI: R Cox, M Hill, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, B Williams, J Adams, J Callinan, K Hall, C Lonergan, T Barton, P Hambling.

Dowty Dynamos 5 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers continued their disappointing run of form against a Dowtys side whom, in recent seasons, have not caused Tom Price's men too much trouble. Rovers grabbed an early goal from a penalty from captain Mark Herbert, and doubled their goal tally near the end of the first half when Pat Daly broke the Dowtys offside trap and squared the ball to the unmarked Pete Hambling to tap in. However, Dowtys 5 goals put an end to Rovers hopes of getting anything out of the game.

Starting XI: R Cox, M McCarthy, M Herbert(c), J Cooper, B Williams, S Johnson, J Callinan, K Hall, J Williams, P Daly, P Hambling.

Broadway Utd 1 - 0 Charlton Rovers

On a sweltering day and on a terrible pitch Rovers faced a tough test against a newly promoted Broadway side. Neither side created much in the first half, with the away side having the upper hand but struggling to create any clear cut chances against a compact Rovers defence. Broadway were reduced to 10 men before half time however when their midfielder attempted to cut Matt Payne in half with a horrendous tackle on the halfway line which thoroughly deserved the straight red it received.

The second half was a similar affair with neither side creating too much. Broadway did grab a goal when the Rovers defence failed to clear the ball and the Broadway striker pounced on a loose ball to smash past Mark Herbert in the Rovers goal. After having Joe Price sent off for violent conduct Rovers seemed to get the bit between their teeth and take the game to Broadway but in the end it was too little too late for the away side with Broadway running out 1-0 winners.

Starting XI: M Herbert (c), M McCarthy, J Price, J Cooper, P Daly, C Lonergan, J Adams, K Hall, M Payne, T Herbert, P Hambling.

Cheltenham Civil Service Res. 1 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers took to the field against Civil Service for the second time in 2 weeks desperate for a win after the weekends dissapointment. There was an air of determination about the team as the game kicked off and this was shown in a solid battling display. Chances were created; Jon Adams had a one on one saved and after being put through by Jon Williams and he also saw his header flash just over from a Tom Herbert corner, Pat Daly was unlucky to see his header end up just the wrong side of the post and the keeper also made a good save from Herbert after the striker had been set through on goal. The breakthrough came midway through the first half after the referee gave a penalty to the away side, with Mark Herbert dispatching the penalty in typical fashion. 1-0 Rovers at the break.

The second half saw Civil Service start to make moves to get back in to the game, and they scored just after the restart after a corner wasnt cleared and the ball smashed in to the net. Rovers continued to battle hard and create chances however, with Matt Payne seeing his one on one chance with the keeper also saved and substitute Pete Hambling also being denied by the keeper. Pat Daly was on hand however to grab the winner for Rovers after chasing down the keeper, forcing him into a mistake and tapping the loose ball over the line. 2 - 1 Rovers happy days!

Charlton Rovers 1 - 3 Northway

Rovers started the game slowly and still looked shell shocked from last weeks shindigs. Northway went 2 - 0 up early on and this woke Rovers up. Sam Johnson scored his first for the club and Rovers then took the upper hand creating several clear cut chances, but unable to get the ball in the back of the net. Missing 2 penalties did not help and with Rovers pushing for the equaliser Northway scored a third.

Charlton Rovers 5 - 2 Cheltenham Civil Service Res.

Rover’s season got underway as it did the previous season, with a high scoring game in mental weather conditions. A slippery surface and eye stinging hail could not stop the Rovers juggernaut against Civil Service, the first goal coming from Mike McCarthy’s curling cross from the right being met by the head of Callum Lonergan, who placed his header in the corner of the net. Rovers continued to pressure and again good work down the right was rewarded. A neat interchange between Tom Herbert and Jon Adams released McCarthy down the right, his cross was met by Sam Johnson who laid the ball into the path of Matt Payne. The midfielders header beat the keeper down to his left to double Rovers lead. The away side grabbed a breakaway goal before the break giving Rovers a 2-1 lead at half time.

The goals kept coming in the second half, with McCarthy having a lot of success down the right. His low cross into the path of Adams was hit first time by the midfielder, and although the keeper saved the shot, he was powerless to stop Tom Herbert smashing the rebound over the line from close range. Good work down the Rovers left this time created their fourth. Sam Johnson’s ball across the edge of the Civil Service box was picked up on the right side of the area by McCarthy who slotted the ball inside the keepers near post. Although the away side grabbed another scrappy goal Rovers had the last laugh. Pat Daly was released one on one with the keeper, rounded him and rolled the ball over the line.

Starting XI: L Smith, M McCathy, M Herbert (c), J Cooper, B Williams, S Johnson, J Adams, J Williams, M Payne, C Lonergan, T Herbert.

Subs: K Hall FOR J Adams, P Daly FOR C Lonergan

Charlton Rovers 2 - 2 Apperley & Tewkesbury Dyn.

Rovers faced Apperley for the second time in a week looking for revenge. It was a fairly even first half with Rovers best chance falling to Pat Daly, on for the injured Pete Hambling. Rovers broke down the right and Jon Adams cut inside and his reverse pass found Daly one on one with the keeper who pulled off a good save. It was Apperley who broke the deadlock however with a dangerous low cross being tapped in by the outstretched leg of their striker. Several tactical changes followed and they seemed to pay off with Rovers looking increasingly dangerous in the second half.
Rovers grabbed their equaliser shortly after half time. Jack Cooper brought the ball out of defence and his through ball was met by Tom Herbert, who having beaten the offside trap, coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. Rovers could have doubled thier lead soon after when a break following an Apperley corner produced a good chance. Mike McCarthy took the ball up the right wing and his long ball into the path of Mark Herbert saw the defender one on one with the keeper, but unfortunately his attempted lob did not find the net. Rovers did take the lead mid way through the second half. Another break down the left saw the ball worked to James Payne on the byline, his cut back was met by Jon Adams who picked his spot, gave the keeper the eyes and rifled it into the bottom corner, via a slight deflection!!! This lead was short lived, unfortunately as a mix up at the back allowed Apperley to break and Joe Price had no choice but to bring the striker down, to deny him an open goal. Price was lucky not to recieve a red card for the deliberate foul. They scored from the spot making the final score 2 - 2.

Apperley & Tewkesbury Dyn. 2 - 1 Charlton Rovers

Rovers travelled to tewkesbury for a promotion 6 pointer, needing a win to keep their promotion hopes alive. Rovers started well, attempting to play their passing game on a very bobbly pitch as opposed to the opposition's favoured long ball tactic. The defence was performing well with Joe Price and Jack Cooper winning every high ball that was thrown at them. Rovers were also creating chances for them, with Callum Lonergan running rings around his marker, finding space on the edge of the box and sending a couple of shots just over. Rovers soon broke the deadlock. A free kick was awarded near the corner flag and Mike McCarthy played it short to Jon Adams. Adams' near post cross was powerfully headed into the net by Pat Daly, to score an important goal for the away side. Unfortunately Rovers could not take their lead into the break with Apperley grabbing an equaliser after a goalmouth scramble following a corner.
Rovers again looked the better side in the second half and as the clock ticked away, it looked increasingly likely they would find the winner they were looking for. Several good moves down both sides could not bring the goal for Rovers, and at the other end the defence was standing strong. Cooper in particular whose heroic goal line block with his manhood demonstrated the teams commitment to the cause. Rovers were however unable to take advantage of their pressure on the home side goal and in the last minute the final nail in the coffin was delivered when Apperley were awarded a controversial penalty which was slotted away to win it for the home side.

Charlton Rovers 1 - 0 AC Olympia

Having already drawn and lost this season against Olympia surely it was time for a Rovers win. Playing the first half into the strong wind and uphill, Rovers were always going to struggle and Olympia had the better possession in the first 45 minutes. Rovers defence was looking strong but struggling to clear into the wind. Whilst keeping Olympia from having many clear cut chances, when they did eventually break through Craig Baker was equal to the shot, tipping round a powerfull Olympia effort. Although not playing their best football, Rovers did have the best chance of the half. After a corner by Adams was cleared by the defence, Matt Courtney-Smith worked the ball back out to Adams, whose cross found Pat Daly unmarked at the far post, but the strikers header went just wide.
Rovers started the second half this time with the slope and the wind and they made it pay. Jack Cooper brought the ball out of defence and found Daly lurking on the wing, Daly cut inside and his cross was met by the head of Tom Herbert. The ball looped over the keeper and in off the underside of the bar to notch up a great goal for the striker. Olympia did create some chances of their own however and but for a fantastic last ditch tackle from Joe Price they could easily have drawn level.

Whaddon Utd Res 5 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers took the trip down to deepest darkest Whaddon looking for 3 points to boost their promotion credentials. Rovers had an early chance when Jon Adams fed Matt Courtney-Smith on the left, Adams continued his run and Courtney-Smith picked out his midfielder, but at full stretch Adams could only volley just over. Courtney-Smith was then unlucky to have a headed goal ruled out for leading with his elbow. Whaddon to be fair were enjoying a lot of possession and could have had a goal of their own, but it was Rovers who broke the deadlock. Adams won a tackle on the edge of the Rovers box and passed to Courtney-Smith, whose ball up the line set Pete Hambling through on goal. With the keeper racing of his line Hambling struck first time to lob the keeper from 30 yards with a great finish. Take a bow son! Whaddon pulled one back to enter half time level.
The second half started and Whaddon were soon 3 - 1 up, with their striker showing quick feet and good finishing in the box. Rovers heads did not drop however and they did add to their tally mid way through the second half. Adams swung in a free kick from the left towards the 6 yard box, the Whaddon defence failed to clear the ball and Courtney-Smith was there to nod it over the line. Pat Daly was unlucky not to grab himself a goal after finding himself clean through on goal, but the Whaddon full back was successful in wrestling him to the ground before he could get his shot away. Towards the end with Rovers pressing for the equaliser, Whaddon scored two late goals to put the game beyond doubt.

Charlton Rovers 0 - 0 Northleach Town

Rovers met Northleach for the first time this season looking for 3 points to keep them in the promotion race. The game was a battle throughout with Rovers creating numerous chances but struggling to convert any of them. The closest the home side came to scoring was when a corner was cleared by the Northleach defence to the edge of the box where Callum Lonergan took a touch and smashed the ball towards the top corner. The away side keeper did well to tip the ball over for another corner. Jack Cooper was also unlucky to see his attempted lob fall just the wrong side of the post and Pat Daly, finding himself one on one with the keeper, shot just too high to keep the scores level at half time.
As the second half dragged on Northleach became camped deeper and deeper in their own half as the pressure grew on them. Pete Hambling rose to meet a corner but his header narrowly went the wrong side of the bar. Towards the end of the match Jon Adams turned on the edge of the box and his powerful drive was spilled by the keeper into the path of Jonny Williams whose attempted rebound effort was smothered by the keeper who had recovered well. Adams also saw another effort sail agonizingly over after a goal mouth scramble following yet another corner. Rovers were fortunate not to concede in injury time when a Northleach corner was sliced by Jonny Williams attempted clearance, only to be cleared of the line by Sam Johnson at the far post.

Charlton Rovers 5 - 2 Gala Wilton Res

The game started scrappily with both sides finding it hard to adjust to the hard, bobbly ground, which in turn was making it hard to play neat football. Early on possession was pretty much equal, with the closest either side coming to scoring was when Pete Hambling did well to find space on the edge of the box, but his shot went just wide of the far post. It was Gala who took the lead however after a break down the left found their striker one on one with Craig Baker and he lifted it over the Rovers number one. The goal however should not have stood as the linesman failed to spot the ball had gone a yard out of play before being passed to their striker. Rovers soon equalised when the Gala keeper failed to read the bounce on Callum lonergan's 30 yard effort, which saw the ball end up in the back of the net. 1 - 1. Rovers went 2 - 1 up just before the break. A long throw in from Mark Herbert was met by the head of Pat Daly, who had done well to outjump his marker and nod the ball into the net.
The second half started and soon the scores were level after Gala scored from a free kick, in off the post levaing Baker with no chance. Undeterred by this set back and some petulant refereeing decisions, Rovers were playing some great football, epitomized by their third goal. Having cleared a corner Rovers broke through midfield with some neat one touch football. Jon Adams and Callum Lonergan linked down the right, Lonergan then found James Payne whose chip over the top into the path of Adams was met by the midfielder. His low cross was met by Pat Daly at the far post who smashed the ball into the roof of the net, to score a great team goal. a fourth soon followed as Jack Cooper was brought down in the box attempting to reach Joe Price's through ball. Mark Herbert dispatched the penalty through the keepers legs. A fifth came shortly after, Rovers again cleared a corner and Adams, having played a one-two with Daly, played a through ball to Jack Cooper who slotted past the keeper to score his first goal of the season.

Star FC Res 2 - 1 Charlton Rovers

Rovers took on table toppers Star looking to close the gap on the leaders. Rovers started brightly with the wind and slope in their favour. Rovers tried to create chances in the first half but the wind was causing problems and carrying the ball straight through to their keeper. Callum Lonergan finally tested him with a 30 yard strike which was moving in the air and the keeper did well to tip over the bar and Pete Hambling saw his header from a corner go just over the bar. The second half did not start well Star took the lead after less than a minute and with the wind and slope now behind them it was alwasy going to be a daunting half for Rovers. But 3 minutes later Pat Daly had equalised, good hold up play and a great pass from Tom Herbert saw Daly sprint clear to finish calmly. Rovers didn't really creat much more in the second half and Star took the lead when their striker popped up at the back post to head in. In the last minute good work from Matt Payne allowed Pat Daly free one on one with the keeper but the striker rushed his shot and hit it straight into his hands.

Charlton Rovers 4 - 0 Dowty Dynamos

Rovers tarted their game against Dowtys looking to buil on their good form, but the start didn't exactly go as planned. A gusty wind and bobbly pitch cant be blamed for the poor quality of passing which Rovers produced in the first half, with neither keeper barely having a save to make in the first 45 minutes. Rovers highlight of the half came after about half an hour. A corner was swung in and got headed out to the edge of the box. Jon Adams attempted to beat his marker  to the ball but was brought down just inside the box, earning the home side a penalty. This was dispatched by Mark Herbert, low to the left to make it 1 - 0 Rovers.
In the second half Rovers were much more dominant, and whilst the free flowing football was still lacking the fighting spirit was still there to see them through to the end. Pat Daly added his name to the score sheet early in the second half when he latched onto a long ball and slotted past the keeper. The striker doubled his lead later on when he charged down the keepers attempted clearance and produced a superb finish under pressure. Chances fell to Adams and Hambling before Daly grabbed his hattrick after running on to Craig Bakers long clearence and again keeping his composure under pressure to beat the keeper.

Northway 1 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers travelled to Northway looking to carry on their good run of form against a side placed just one below them in the league. Both sides started brightly with each having good spells of possession, but chances were few and far between in the early stages of the game. Midway through the first half Rovers created their first clear cut opportunity. a cross from the left hand side was well headed in by Pete Hambling but this effort was diallowed for an apparent push. Rovers created another good chance towards the end of the first half. Jon Adams' forward run beat the offside trap and having latched onto Jack Coopers through ball saw his shot well saved by the home side keeper. Minutes later Hambling also found himself through on goal and was only denied a goal by a combination of the keeper and a defender. At the other end Rovers defence was looking strong and Northway's only chance, a header bound for the top corner, was expertly clawed round the post by Craig Baker at full stretch.
In the second half Rovers continued to play some nice football and looked like they were creating chances for fun. Pete Hambling had yet another headed goal disallowed for pushing and Tom Herbert was unlucky to see his shot fly just over after latching onto Jon Adams' deflected effort. Mike McCarthy was looking dangerous coming forward from right back and his cross into the path of Mark Herbert, found the centre back one on one with the keeper but his left foot shot could not find the net. McCarthy again put in a good cross to the far post but the unmarked Callum Lonergan's header flew just the wrong side of the post. Rovers were not the only team creating chances however. Twice Northway looked to have taken the lead, firstly when the strikers  shot deflected off Mark Herbert and onto the post and secondly when the Northway number 9 found himself one on one with Craig Baker and only 6 yards out. For all the world it looked like he would score but Baker pulled off an unbelievable double save to keep the scores level. Joe Price also put in a fantastic last ditch tackle to stop a Northway midfielder having a clear strike on goal. It was Northway who broke the deadlock after 75 minutes when their striker turned on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot in off the post to score a well taken goal. This left a sour taste in Rovers mouth who began to rue their missed opportunities. This spurred them on however and when Mark Herbert's long throw into the box was headed in by brother Tom with 5 minuted left, you got the feeling that this was not the last goal of the day. Sure enough with both sides tiring, Craig Baker's long kick upfield was controlled by Tom Herbert 30 yards out and to the right of goal. Spotting the keeper off his line Herbert struck and his shot looped over the Northway number 1 and into the top corner for a great winner. In the end, despite a host of missed opportunities, it was encouraging to see so many being created and the 3 points deservedly returned with Rovers to Fortress "Square Nets" Balcarras.

Charlton Rovers 1 - 0 Bredon Res

Rovers kicked off against a physically big Bredon side, looking to build on their victory last week. The game kicked off at a fast pace and Rovers were using the flanks well with Callum Lonergan and Pat Daly seeing a lot of the ball. The Rovers midfield were doing well to mark the Bredon playmaker out of the game and consequently Bredon were offering very little going forward. Rovers soon started to threaten the Bredon goal. Good play down the left saw Mike McCarthy cross the ball in and Pat Daly was unlucky to see his shot fly just over the bar from 10 yards out. The same combination again saw Daly's miss control bounce out to Tom Price who's volley from the edge of the box went just wide of the target. Jonny Williams then saw a good effort go just the wrong side of the post. Rovers soon broke the deadlock. Jon Adams' corner from the right was powerfully headed in by returning skipper Mark Herbert, starting his first game of the season after coming back from injury. It was a welcome goal for Rovers who had dominated the half but had struggled to make it count.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first, Rovers dominating play with Bredon not able to test Craig Baker in the Rovers goal. A chance soon fell to Lonergan. Pat Daly broke down the right and his cross was met on the half volley by Lonergan, but his powerful shot was just too high. Rovers nearly doubled their lead on the hour after Jon Adams' "shot" from 30 yards hit the underside of the bar and was scrambled away by the defence. Daly also had a good effort saved by the keeper. The away side continued to struggle for chances with the Rovers defence playing well against a physical Bredon strikeforce. The game ended 1 - 0 meaning back to back victories for Rovers for the first time since November.

Cheltenham Civil Svs 2 - 3 Charlton Rovers

Rovers arrived at the Civil service ground looking for their first victory of 2009 and got off to a good start. It was always going to be hard to play neat quick football given the poor state of the pitch, but despite this Rovers looked threatening on the break and chances soon came. Jon Adams' deflected shot was well saved by the keeper down to his right and Joe Price was unlucky to see his header loop just the wrong side of the bar from a Jonny Williams free kick. The deadlock was broken midway through the first half. A serious of neat interchanges from Pete Hambling and Adams gave Hambling the chance to cross. This centre was meet on the volley by Williams, whose shot was blocked but the rebound fell to Callum Lonergan whose first time shot into the corner gave the forward his first goal of the season. The lead did not last long however, with Civil Service grabbing an equaliser just before half time after the away side failed to clear a corner.
The second half started with Rovers, clearly the better team, determined not to drop points against a mediocre Civil Service team. This determination was rewarded early in the second half after strong hold up play by Tom Herbert allowed Jonny Williams to bring the ball forward from midfield and calmly slot past the keeper to give Rovers the lead. After a strong Rovers penalty claim had been bizarrely turned down by the referee, Civil Service again brought the game level after a break down the right hand side brought a good finish from the striker on the edge of the box. Rovers didn't lie down however and after a spell of pressure were awarded a corner. Jon Adams floated the ball into the danger zone and there was substitute Pat Daly to bundle the ball over the line to grab a third for Rovers. Rovers could have had four after Daly broke down the right and squared to Lonergan, whose shot was well saved by the keeper and Daly's effort from the rebound cleared off the line. Jack Cooper had a stunning dipping volley tipped over by the keeper who was now earning his money. A good win for Rovers and 3 well deserved points.

Cheltenham Saracens 4 - 3 Charlton Rovers

Rovers went to The Folley looking to pick up their first win of 2009. The away side started well, showing their intention early on to attack and Callum Lonergan saw his shot saved by the keeper after a few minutes. Rovers soon took the lead. After good link up play with Tom Herbert, Pete Hambling found himself one on one with the keeper and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1 -0 Rovers. Hambling could have doubled his tally straight after, but the keeper stood up well to the strikers attempts to get round him. Saracens hit an immediate reply and their striker slammed the ball in the bottom corner to make it 1 - 1. Despite not having much possession, Saracens then took the lead after the home side  player just beat Mark Herbert to the ball and saw his weak shot trickle over the line to make it an undeserved 2 - 1 score line. Rovers didn't drop their heads however and a nice move saw them equalise. Matt Hill, Jon Adams and Callum Lonergan followed the Gaffer's instructions to play more "triangles" and one such move eventually saw Adams chip the ball over the defence for Lonergan to run onto. His low cross was slammed into the net by Tom Herbert to bring the scores level. The most eventful half of football Rovers have played this season ended on a downer. A Saracens brake down their right and the home side's right wingers attempted low cross sliced into the far bottom corner to send the home side 3 - 2 up at half time.
Rovers knew what they had to do in the second half and continued to carve out some good chances. They soon drew level, tom Herbert did well to hold the ball up and pick out Jon Adams' forward run into the box. Adams' back heel into the path of Pete Hambling fooled his marker and allowed the striker to take a touch before lofting it over the on coming keeper for a well taken third goal. 3 -3. Again however Rovers could not keep Saracens at bay and the home side went in front yet again. The remainder of the game saw Rovers create numerous chances but they could not find the net. James payne had a good long range effort tipped over, Tom Herbert hit the post and Adams saw his volley fly frustratingly over the bar, and but for some ridiculous decisions from the Saracens linesman there could have been plenty more goals for the away side.

Charlton Rovers 0 - 0 Winchcombe Town

Rovers went into this game looking for revenge following their defeat to Winchcombe earlier in the season. The home side started the brighter and were unlucky not to go ahead, when some good work down the right hand side saw the ball crossed into the path of callum lonergan, who with the keeper closing him down, poked his shot just wide. Rovers were dominating possession and the back 4 had little to worry about. As the first half continued, Rovers continued to look the better side and again went close to breaking the deadlock. After some neat passing in midfield the ball fell to Jonny Williams in space 35 yards out, and his left foot drive was well tipped over by the out stretched Winchcombe keeper. Half time came and the score remained 0 - 0.

The second half was much the same as the first, if anything Rovers were increasingly in control but again were finding it hard to create any clear cut chances. With about 10 minutes to go Winchcombe were reduced to 10 men, after their midfielder put in a reckless tackle on Jon Adams, a sign of the away sides frustration at being camped in their own half. With 10 men Winchcombe put everyone behind the ball but Rovers started to create a few more chances. The returning Mark Herbert, on as sub for his first appearance of the season, had a chance late on but his volley at the far post didn't go as planned! The game ended 0 - 0, but despite missing out on the 3 points they deserved, Rovers put in a good all round display.

Brockworth Albion Res 2 - 2 Charlton Rovers

Rovers first game of 2009 saw them up against Brockworth, a team who always provide tough opposition. The first half started with both teams struggling to find their rhythm after the long christmas break. Rovers started to play some nice football in the final third towards the end of the half and created some chances, with Pete Hambling shooting just wide after finding himself one on one with the keeper, and Tom Barton's low drive hitting the outside of the post. At the other end Brockworth had a couple of chances, notably from set plays, but Craig Baker was equal to anything that came his way.

As the second half started the conditions deteriorated, with the wind starting to blow strongly in the faces of the Rovers players and the pitch cutting up meaning that it was never going to be a half of entertaining football. Brockworth started to use the wind to their advantage and soon broke the deadlock. Rovers did not let their heads drop however and drew level a couple of minutes later. Pete Hambling's low cross into the box was knocked into his own net by a defender, under pressure form tom Barton. Rovers then took the lead. Barton's pressuring of the Brockworth defence on the halfway line saw the ball fall to the feet of Jon Adams, and his chip over the top found the run of Pat Daly, who having held his run to beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and passed into an empty net, 2 - 1 Rovers. The lead did not last long however as a Brockworth midfielder ran onto a loose ball and slotted past Baker. Chances fell to both sides after that, notably to Barton whose shot in the last few minutes was well saved by the keeper, but no more goals followed.

On a sun filled winters day, Rovers travelled to Frampton looking to carry their fine league form into the County Cup. Gala Wilton Res 0 - 1 Charlton Rovers

After last weeks battling victory over Star, manager Tom Price demanded the same again from his team as they took to the pitch against Gala wilton. Rovers showed their intent early on, harassing their opposition all over the park and not giving them any space to play. The chances soon came, Callum Lonergan was unlucky not to break the deadlock after ten minutes, but it was his link up play with Paddy Daly which created the opening goal. Daly beat his man to the ball after Joe Price had played it long and having played a one two with Lonergan somehow managed to squeeze the ball past the approaching goalkeeper and into the net. 1 - 0 the Rovers. Rovers defence was again putting in a good shift and giving Gala nothing infront of goal.

Rovers came out for the second half with Jon Adams looking like a poor mans Terry Butcher, with his face bandaged up after taking an elbow to the nose at the end of the first half. Chances fell to Rovers, notably to James Payne, Pat Daly and fresh of the bench Tom Barton. But the Gala goalkeeper turned out to be a much better shot stopper than decision maker, pulling off several good saves. Rovers starting to sit deeper allowed Gala to pile on the pressure (or shall we say keep hitting the long ball) but the Rovers defence held strong and dealt with everything hoofed at them, again captain Joe Price leading by example and the blossoming partnership with Jack Cooper did not allow Gala any time on the ball in front of goal. Of the few chances Gala did create, the returning Chris Courtney-Smith pulled off a great save, tipping the ball over after a long range effort and that really was all he had to save all day thanks to the superb defensive efforts from the team and Matt 'stop it with anything' Hill taking one square in the balls to stop a goal bound shot. With commitment like that Rovers were not going to give up the 3 points, and again their battling qualities were shown as the referee blew his whistle to declare Rovers the winners.

Charlton Rovers 2 - 1 Star FC Res

Table toppers Star were the visitors to Balcarass and having had 3 quality games against them last year, Rovers were looking for a crucial 3 points to stay up with the league front runners. Star turned up looking more like rugby players than footballers, with the vast majority of the team standing tall at 6 foot plus so Rovers knew they had a tough physical game ahead of them. Rovers were on their game from the off, never shirking a tackle or challenging every ball. Predictably, Star were most dangerous from their set plays and this showed itself as a cross from the left was flicked on at the near post and smashed in by the striker, against the run of play it has to be said. Rovers did not drop their heads however and were soon level. James Payne spread the ball wide to Callum Lonergan on the right, whose cross was knocked into the path of Pete Hambling and his confident finish beat the Star keeper at the back post. Rovers defence was playing well and limiting Star to a couple of long range efforts, which Craig Baker dealt with well.

The second half started at the same frantic pace that the first half had been. On the hour mark Rovers went ahead. Jon Adams received the ball to feet from Hambling's throw in the corner, having nutmegged his marker was able to chip the ball over the congested six yard box into the path of Mike McCarthy at the back post, whose half volley made no mistake in beating the keeper. 2 - 1 . A period of Star pressure followed and but for the resilience of Baker, Joe Price and Jack Cooper at the back, the away side would have equalised. Rovers played the last 20 minutes with their backs to the wall soaking up Star pressure and refusing to give their lead away. Rovers were still creating chances on the break and could have put the game beyond doubt, Lonergan was unlucky to see his superb effort deflect of a full stretched defender and onto the crossbar.. Debutant Jay Jones had a good effort well saved by the Star keeper. In the end Rovers determination for the 3 points was deservedly rewarded and became only the second side to take points of Star this season.

Dowty Dynamos 1 - 4 Charlton Rovers

The game started at it's usual fast pace with Rovers struggling to play their quick passing game due to the obscenely long grass. But it was the away side who took the lead mid way through the first half. Pat Daly was put through on goal and having knocked the ball past the on rushing keeper, the Dowty number 1 clattered into him, Penalty. Tom Herbert placed it to the right of the keepers reach to make it 1 - 0. The second soon followed, Matt Payne's free kick from halfway, was chested down by Jon Adams on the edge of the box and his Cruyff turn wrong footed his marker and opened up space for Adams to send a left foot shot into the top corner. 2 - 0. A series of Dowty corners followed as the home side tried to get back into the match and Tom Price was unlucky to see his attempted clearance end up in the back of the Rovers net following a good inswinging corner.

Minutes into the second half Craig Baker was called into action. A powerful Dowty drive from 30-yards was seemingly heading for the keepers gloves, but the ball hit a divot which sent the ball flying upwards towards the top corner. Baker however reacted superbly to knock the ball round the post. There was a danger of Rovers becoming complacent on their lead but this was soon knocked out of them by the rallying cries of Captain Joe Price. Going forward Rovers were looking increasingly dangerous with large gaps appearing in the Dowty defence. A third goal soon came. Joe Price's long pass from the back fell right in to the path of James Payne who coolly lobbed the approaching keeper and lifted the ball over his head and into the net. A few minutes later he had his second of the game. Callum Lonergan, fresh of the bench saw his powerful drive well blocked by the keeper, but beat him to the rebound. Having drawn him away from the goal he had the composure to place his cross onto the head of James Payne who nodded into an empty net to make it 4 - 1. Job done, next week the mighty Rovers face top of the table Star, can their rich vein of form continue!

Charlton Rovers 3 - 4 Northway

Northway provided the opposition to for Rovers return to league action and what a game it produced. Northway took an early lead when their striker flicked a powerful nearpost corner into the net. 1-0 Northway. Rovers were not deterred and started to press forward. Jon Adams was unlucky not to convert after a good one-two with Pete Hambling and Tom Price saw his volley sail just over after finding space on the edge of the box. The second half started and Rovers soon found themselves another goal down. But even this setback did not cause the home teams heads to drop. Rovers went at their opposition like a team possessed and soon pulled one back. Matt Payne’s chip over the top in the direction of Tom Herbert was cut out by a defender, whose clearance lobbed his keeper and ended up in the net. The equaliser followed 2 minutes later after Tom Herbert nutmegged his marker and coolly slotted passed the keeper for a well-deserved goal. 2-2. Rovers then reverted to 4-4-2 in an attempt to open the game up. Both Jonny Williams and Jon Adams had good chances to score but could only find the keepers gloves and Tom Herbert nearly poked in his second, the ball trickling inches wide. A Northway break against the run of play resulted in their third; a low Northway shot unluckily deflected over Craig Baker by Jack Cooper’s outstretched leg. Rovers wouldn’t lie down and take this however. With 15 minutes to play, Jon Adams found space in the middle and struck a hard shot which cannoned off a Northway defender, and then, out of nowhere, fullback Mike McCarthy came steaming through from the back to meet the deflection on the volley, dipping his shot nicely under the crossbar for the equaliser. Rovers continued to press looking for the winner they surely deserved but it was Northway who wrapped up the 3 points with 5 minutes left after Rovers again were caught on the break, their striker shooting in from 6 yards. A disappointing result but a hell of a battling performance from Rovers.

County Cup 2nd Round

Uley 1 - 4 Charlton Rovers

Rovers travelled to the back of beyond looking to take their recent league form into the county cup against a Uley side who they knew little about. Uley started off kicking down the slope and had a lot of the ball in the early stages, creating one chance, which went just over the bar. An early wake up call for the away side. After this Rovers started to dominate passing the ball nicely through the team and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Mike McCarthy was released down the left and his persistence to the by-line was rewarded when a defensive mix up allowed him to cut inside and poke it past the keeper. They nearly doubled they’re lead when, following a corner and with the keeper nowhere, Jon Adams chipped effort from the edge of the box was cleared off the line by a Uley head. The lead didn’t last long however as a Uley free kick from the left was slammed into the top corner with little Craig Baker could do about it. 1-1 at halftime. The second half started scrappily with both sides struggling to hold onto the ball. Rovers however were looking very dangerous on the break and this proved itself when Pete Hambling beat his man on the right hand side and crossed for Tom Herbert to slot past the keeper for his third goal in 3 games. A couple of substitutions and formation change saw a reshuffle of the Rovers pack and this soon brought a goal. Substitute Matt Payne found himself with time on the ball in the middle of the park and his inch perfect pass in to the path of Jon Adams was coolly chipped over the onrushing keeper and into the net by the midfielder come right back. There was still time for a fourth when James Payne’s through ball was picked up by Pete Hambling, who having beaten the offside trap shot past the keeper and into the net rounding off a great team performance from Rovers

Charlton Rovers 3 - 0 Cheltenham Civil Service

Rovers long awaited return to Fortress "square nets" Balcarrass saw their best performance of the season. Playing a Cheltenham Civil Service team who had been playing in division 1 last year. It was the away side who took the early initiative and spent the start of the game camped in the Rovers half. The home defence stood strong however and Rovers started to exert their influence on the game. Pat Daly soon broke the deadlock, after playing a great one-two with Tom Herbert before lobbing the keeper from the edge of the box. Rovers were playing easily the best football they had played all season and with Pete Hambling finding a lot of space down the right they were always looking dangerous. Daly could have doubled the lead after hambling's low cross found Daly in front of goal, but his shot narrowly flew wide. Tom Herbert, Jon Adams and Jonny Williams also saw good efforts narrowly miss the target. Rovers started the second half like they had ended the first, on top and looking dangerous. They soon doubled their lead after a Jonny Williams corner found Daly at the back post, and his powerful header left the keeper with no chance 2 - 0 Rovers. The game was pretty much over after that, the away side never looked like scoring and Rovers looked comfortable on the lead. Tom Herbert rounded off a good Rovers display with a powerful free kick from 20-yards which flew past the keeper into the top corner of the net. Just as Rovers looked certain to record their first clean sheet of the season, a Civy striker found himself free at the back post and for the first time in the game produced an attempt on goal, only a great save from Craig Baker kept the vistors from scoring. The game ended 3 - 0 and gives Rovers a massive confidence boost ahead of the County Cup clash away at Uley next week.

AC Olympia 2 Charlton Rovers 2

AC Olympia provided the opposition for Rovers on this hot October day. After 2 good games against them last season, Tom Price’s team knew they were in for a tough game. Olympia pressed early on and hit the bar after a good move down their right hand side. They soon scored shortly after, with their striker breaking free on the edge of the box and despite a last ditch tackle from Joe Price, Rovers were unlucky to see the shot deflect of Price and into the net. After their early dominance however, Rovers started to exert their authority on the game and Pat Daly was unlucky to see his shot saved by the keeper after a one two with Jon Adams on the edge of the box. Pete Hambling also went close after breaking free down the right and firing just wide.

The second half started well for Rovers, who soon drew level. A good move down the right by Matt Payne Callum Lonergan and Jon Adams saw the ball passed into the path of Jonny Williams whose 30-yard shot flew away from the keeper into the corner of the net. Great goal! This seemed to give Rovers the lift they needed and they started to play with renewed determination. However, Olympia soon went in front again after a freak goal from a corner. The Olympia player’s deflected shot cannoned off Matt Hill’s knee on the line, off the post and bar before trickling over the line. Undeterred, Rovers soon hit back. A corner from Adams was met by the head of Joe Price whose looping header was nodded over the line by Tom Herbert, who had only entered the action seconds earlier; an inspired substitution. The game ended 2 - 2, and Rovers can be proud of the effort they put in to earn this away point.

Bredon Res 1 Charlton Rovers 1

Rovers travelled to Bredon on the back of a disappointing result against Winchcombe in the previous game. The game started at its usual frantic pace, and with Rovers coming up against a physically big Bredon side, it was never going to be a game easy on the eye. Despite taking a lot of early pressure, Rovers were the first side to break the deadlock halfway through the first half. The goal came after a Jonny Williams free kick was fired into the box on to the head of Matt Payne, whose firm header cannoned off the underside of the bar and into the net.

The second half carried on from where the first one left off, with both sides struggling to impose themselves and get a grip on the game. Bredon soon brought the score level and this seemed to fire up the Rovers side. However they could not put this determination into action and struggled to get the better of their opponents, who could easily have nicked all 3 points at the end. The game ended a disappointing 1-1 draw.

Winchcombe Town Res 1 – 0 Charlton Rovers

Rovers first away game of the season saw them take on last seasons division 3 champions Winchcombe Town. Rovers started slowly and failed to create any clear-cut chances in the first half. The closest either side came to scoring was a Winchcombe free kick that hit the post. A half time regrouping was what Rovers needed and that it just what they got.

They came out in the second half playing some quality football, carving open the Winchcombe defence with some nice passing football but still could not test the keeper. Winchombe soon started to react to Rovers taking the initiative and started to outplay their visitors; again hit the frame of the bar after Rovers failed to organise whilst defending a free kick. Rovers best chance came mid way through the second half when Sam Johnson whipped in a good cross from the left and Tom Barton having got in to a great position on the edge of the 6 yard box poked the ball just wide. It was Winchcombe who took the lead however after Rovers failed to clear their lines after defending a corner and the home side striker found himself in space to smash the ball in leaving Craig Baker with no chance. This seemed to give Rovers the kick up the backside they needed and in the last 10 minutes and they managed several attempts on goal. James Payne saw a couple of long range shots go just wide and Jon Adams, after managing to get behind the Winchcombe defence by playing a one two with Tom Price, saw his shot well saved by the keeper. The match ended with a 1-0 defeat for Rovers, their first of the season.

Charlton Rovers 4 - 1 Brockworth

Rovers returned to the fortress looking to keep their 100% record against Brockworth, but this soon came under threat as the away side scored the first goal of the match after a break down their right hand side. As we saw in the last match, Rovers are a team of fighters and this deficit was soon made up. A free kick was whipped in from the right by Jonny Williams, and Pat Daly was there at the far post to smash it in to the top corner from close range. Daly doubled his tally before half time with the goal of the game. A great passing move starting from keeper Craig Baker, went up the right hand side through James Payne and Mike McCarthy and onto Tom Barton, whose cross was met first time by Daly and his clinical finish left the keeper with no chance, in off the post. Rovers were flying, and Brockworth’s reaction was to kick lumps out of the home side, with several potential ‘leg breakers’ flying in.

This did not unnerve the home side however and their good breaking football continued after the break. Daly soon scored his third after a great through ball from man of the match Williams, making him the second Rovers player to score a hat trick in only the second game of the season. With the hard tackling Brockworth side it was always likely to boil over, and halfway through the second half the away side centre back decided to head lock Tom Barton during a corner, for which both players saw red. A fourth goal for Rovers soon followed however. A move down the Rovers left saw the ball crossed in and the keeper punch it out to the edge of the box, right into the path of the onrushing Jon Adams who took one touch and volleyed it into the net. Rovers were coasting and never looked like conceding from then on.

Charlton Rovers 5 – 4 Cheltenham Saracens

Rovers’ kicked off the 2008-09 season at a sodden Balcarras against a much-improved Saracens side, with both sides keen to get 3 points on the board. Saracens quickly found themselves 1-0 up after a quick break, but it was not long before last seasons top scorer, Pat Daly does what he does best, and rounded the keeper to make it 1-1. Another Saracens goal made it 2-1 going into the break, with Rovers not really taking advantage of their new attacking formation.

This was soon to change after the break. Good work down the right saw Tom Barton beat the keeper before tapping into an empty net, and with something now to play for Rovers seemed determined to press for the win. Barton soon got his second, which was promptly cancelled out by a breakaway Saracens goal. Tom Herbert then looked certain to put Rovers 4-3 up when he found himself clean through on goal, but was wrestled to the floor by a defender who deservedly found himself on the wrong side of a red card. This left man of the match Barton to put away his hat trick from the spot, and surely seal the 3 points for Rovers. The goals then stopped, for a good 15 minutes at least, after which Saracens were awarded a corner from which they scored. 4-4. What a game. But Rovers were far from done. Their 4-3-3 formation was causing the 10 men of Saracens all kinds of trouble and good chances fell and were narrowly missed by Barton, Jon Adams and Pete Hambling. And it was super sub Hambling who managed to finally grab the win for the home side, cutting in from the left and drilling the ball inside the keepers near post.
